Tarun Tahiliani is a noted Indian fashion designer.[1][2][3]

In 2010, Tahiliani claimed an exemption as an artist on his income tax for his design work under section 80 RR of the Indian Income Tax Act.[4] An order by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal granting status as an artist was contested by the Income Tax (I-T) department, who do not consider Tahiliani an artist.

Biography

Tarun Tahiliani studied at the Doon School and then went on to obtain a degree in Business Management from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania.[5] On returning to India, in 1987 he opened the first fashion boutique in India, 'Ensemble'.[6]

Tarun also worked with Save the Children India to urge the government to increase the health budget to 3 per cent ahead of the budget announcement.[7]

His father, Admiral Radhakrishna Hariram Tahiliani, served as the Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy between 1984 and 1987 and as the Governor of Sikkim between 1990 and 1994.[8]

Early Life and Education

Tarun Tahiliani was born in Mumbai, where he spent most of his childhood. He then went on to attend boarding school, the Doon School, in Dehradun. From there he went on to attend St. Stephens College in New Delhi. Disappointed by the lack of challenges, he then moved to the United States to Vassar to get a degree in Economics. He finally graduated from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.

He came back to join his maternal family business Jayemes Engineering which sold oilfield equipment. His wife Sailaja Tahiliani joined him in this endeavor. Sailaja Tahiliani, born and brought up in the United States, was shocked at the quality of retail in India at that time. While in America, she bought things “made in India” but couldn't find the same quality or designs in India. It was then that the idea of Ensemble was conceived. The Tahiliani’s got a lot of guidance and assistance from Rohit Khosla. Many professionals of the Indian fashion fraternity regard Khosla as the man who brought together and galvanised the Indian fashion movement. What started as a side project piqued Tarun so much that he became obssessed with design and fashion. They saw vast potential in the largely underdeveloped fine clothing and couture industry. Capitalizing on this gap, Ensemble opened it doors. It became India’s first upmarket boutique, in 1987, heralding a fashion and retail revolution in India. Realizing that design was his true calling, Tahiliani set off to study design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 1991. He received an Associate’s degree in Fashion Design from FIT in 1993. He then went from strength to strength and his inherent talent truly blossomed.
