Last Man Standing is an American television sitcom starring Tim Allen and Nancy Travis that currently airs on ABC.[1][2] The series premiered on October 11, 2011.[3] This is the second sitcom Allen starred on for ABC, the first being Home Improvement, which ran from 1991 to 1999.

Premise

The series follows Mike Baxter, a director of marketing at an outdoor sporting goods store in Denver, Colorado, whose world is dominated by women — especially at home with his wife and three daughters, one of whom is a single mother.

Main cast

  • Tim Allen as Mike Baxter, a father of three daughters and the director of marketing for "Outdoor Man," a sporting goods store. He is a so-called "manly-man," and he believes in old-fashioned values. He is a licensed Amateur Radio operator, with call sign KA0XTT. The American Radio Relay League Public relations department, as well as the show's producer, John Amodeo NN6JA, worked to make the dipictation of Amateur Radio very accurate in the show. [4]
  • Nancy Travis as Vanessa Baxter, Mike's wife who is is a geologist. She is very tolerant of Mike's macho behavior.
  • Alexandra Krosney as Kristin Elizabeth Baxter, the eldest daughter. She was pregnant with her son, Boyd, during her senior year of high school and the two still live in the Baxter home. She works at a diner and is usually seen wearing her waitress uniform.
  • Molly Ephraim as Amanda Elaine "Mandy" Baxter, the second oldest daughter. She is very much into fashion and is not as scholarly as her sisters, but excels in social situations. She dreams of appearing in reality television.
  • Kaitlyn Dever as Eve Baxter, the youngest daughter. She is a tomboy and generally has the same interests as Mike, but her newfound interest in boys begins to strain their relationship.
  • Christoph Sanders as Kyle Anderson, Mike's younger co-worker at "Outdoor Man". He is very much into feminine things, like romantic comedies and baking. He is dating Kristin.
  • Hector Elizondo as Ed Alzate, Mike's boss. Mike usually talks to him about the happenings in his home, seeking advice.

Recurring cast

  • Evan and Luke Kruntchev as Boyd Baxter. Boyd is Kristin's son. Mike enjoys spending quality time with Boyd, as the son he never had.

Development and production

Last Man Standing first appeared on ABC's development slate in late 2010 when writer Jack Burditt received a put pilot commitment from the network under the original title Man Up.[5] In January 2011, ABC green-lighted production of a pilot episode under the title Last Days of Man.[6][7] On February 18, Tim Allen, who had been attached to the potential series from the beginning, officially joined the project in the lead role.[8][9][10] At the end of March, Nancy Travis joined the cast in the leading female role as Allen's "smart and loving wife who doesn’t miss much".[11][12][13] Soon thereafter, Hector Elizondo came on board in a supporting role as the boss to Allen's character.[14]

On May 13, 2011, ABC picked up the pilot for the 2011–2012 television season under the new title Last Man Standing.[15] On May 17, 2011, ABC announced that the series would air on Tuesday nights at 8/7 Central.[16] It debuted on October 11, 2011, with the first two episodes airing in a one-hour premiere.[3]

On November 3, 2011, the series was picked up for a full season of twenty-two episodes.[17] On January 12, 2012, the order was increased to twenty-four episodes.[18]
