Tom Cullerton is currently the Village President of Villa Park and a candidate for Illinois State Senate in the 23rd District.
Early Life
Tom Cullerton was born in Illinois. He is a member of the Cullerton political family including long time Democratic committeewoman PJ Cullerton and 38th Ward Alderman Tim Cullerton. His distant cousin John Cullerton is the current President of the Illinois State Senate.
In 1990, he enlisted in the United States Army's Infantry Division. He served for three years until he was honorably discharged in 1993. After the US Army he became a Teamster route salesman.
Villa Park Village Council
Tom became a resident of Villa Park in 2002. He started his community activism by founding a Neighborhood Watch program and serving as one of its block captains one year after moving to town. He also got involved with the Villa Park chapters of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Two years later in 2005 Tom chose to run for Villa Park Trustee to ensure that the residents of Villa Park were receiving the best services and to initiate a more business friendly atmosphere.
President of Villa Park
In 2009 the voters of Villa Park elected him to serve as Village President with a resounding majority of the vote beating incumbent President Joyce Stupegia with 53% of the vote in a three-way race. Since Tom has been Village President, he has improved Villa Park’s financial stability through responsible budgeting, has been honored by the Sierra Club for initiatives the town has taken to become “green” having championed their Green City program. He streamlined governmental services making them easier to access and less cumbersome for individuals and businesses to utilize.
President Cullerton also serves on the DuPage Water Commission as a representative elected by his fellow mayors in DuPage County Board District 2. He is also a member of the Legislative Commission in the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus.
Candidacy for State Senate
On October 6, 2011 President Cullerton announced his candidacy for election to the Illinois State Senate in the new 23rd district which includes the cities of Addison, Bloomingdale, Bartlett, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Itasca, Villa Park, West Chicago, Wayne and Wood Dale.
