Resident Evil: Retribution is an upcoming 2012 3D science-fiction action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. It is the fifth installment in the Resident Evil film series and the third to be directed by Anderson. The films are based on the Capcom survival horror series Resident Evil.
The film has many returning actors and characters, along with new characters from the video game not featured in the films. Filming took place from October to December 2011 for a scheduled release date of September 14, 2012.[1]
Synopsis
Alice is captured by Umbrella once again, and awakens in the heart of their operation facility; as she moves further in the complex, more of her past is unveiled and she continues to hunt for those responsible for the outbreak. Her quest takes her and her newfound allies from Tokyo to New York, Washington D.C. and Moscow. After a "mind-blowing" revelation, she is forced to rethink everything, finally finding out the truth about herself, and the Umbrella Corporation.[2]
Cast
- Milla Jovovich as Alice
- Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine
- Johann Urb as Leon S. Kennedy, who is described as "the leader of the Resistance, who teams with Alice as she battles the Umbrella Corporation and the swarm of undead."[3]
- Li Bingbing as Ada Wong;[4] she will be held captive by Jill[5]
- Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker
- Kevin Durand[6] as Barry Burton
- Oded Fehr as Carlos Olivera; about returning, Fehr said "Well, the interesting thing is that in a way I do, and in a way I don't. See, because I kind of come back twice on this one. I think you had a hundred Millas on the last one. So obviously, you can have more Carloses and more Ones and more Rains. The interesting thing is, I come back as two different guys on this one. There's a dynamic to the relationship with Milla's character, and then there's the other side. He's working for the Umbrella again. So the answer is both. It’s great. I get to play two different characters. It's fun. Two opposing sides".[5]
- Boris Kodjoe as Luther West
- Michelle Rodriguez as Rain Ocampo; she injects herself with the Las Plagas parasite for increased strength and performance.[5]
- Colin Salmon as James "One" Shade
- Aryana Engineer as Becky[7]
- Mika Nakashima as J-Pop Girl, Nakashima portrayed a zombie in the opening Tokyo scene of the previous film[8]
Production
Development
Paul W. S. Anderson returned as writer and director, Glen McPherson serves as director of photography and Kevin Phipps as production designer.[1] An element from the fourth video game called the Las Plagas parasite will play a part in the film and will allow the undead to "run around, ride motorbikes, and shoot machine guns".[9]
Casting
Returning from the previous film are: Milla Jovovich as Alice, Sienna Guillory (Jill Valentine) and Boris Kodjoe (Luther West).[10][11] Shawn Roberts (Albert Wesker) makes a cameo appearance.[12] Colin Salmon who played James "One" Shade and Michelle Rodriguez who played Rain Ocampo in the first film return.[12][13] Oded Fehr who portrayed Carlos Olivera in the second and third film also returns.[6] There will be two "versions" of Rain, One, and Carlos; one being portrayed as "evil" and one as "good".[5]
The characters, Ada Wong (played by Li Bingbing), Leon S. Kennedy (Johann Urb)[3] and Barry Burton (Kevin Durand) will appear in the film.[14] Ali Larter (Claire Redfield), Wentworth Miller (Chris Redfield) and Spencer Locke (K-Mart) will not return and their absence will be explained by their characters being captured by Umbrella.[14]
Filming
Principal photography started on October 10 and wrapped on December 23, 2011 for a 55 day shoot.[1][9][15] Filming locations included Toronto at Cinespace's Kipling studio facility,[1] Times Square in New York City, Tokyo, and Red Square in Moscow.[16] Resident Evil: Retribution is the second film in the series to be shot in 3D, the first being Resident Evil: Afterlife.[17] The Red Epic camera system was used, which producer Jeremy Bolt said is 50% smaller than the Sony F35 that was used for Resident Evil: Afterlife.[18]
On October 11, a platform collapsed during the second day of filming and injured 16 people on the set. According to Toronto police, ten people were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. Injuries included bruises and broken bones. Emergency workers had a difficult time determining which injuries were real since the people were dressed in zombie costumes with fake blood.[19]
The streets of Red Square were cleared for a day and background filming was done in the Russian subway after it was cleared for five hours. Most of the streets were built into sets.[5] An action scene inspired by the fifth video game where the characters are driving a Hummer while being chased by zombies is featured, but for the film the Hummer was changed to a Rolls Royce Phantom.[9] The scene was filmed in late November in Moscow.[20][5]
Durand and Roberts wrapped filming in the first week of December and Li wrapped on December 14. A fight scene between Jill and Alice that involved over 200 moves began filming December 14 until the end of production.[21][5]
Release
The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D, as well as 2D on September 14, 2012.[2]
