Sooty is a 2011 British children's television series that airs on CITV. It is the first new series to feature Sooty since the last series ended in 2004, and the first since Richard Cadell bought the rights to the brand in 2008. [1]

The series sees Richard starting a new job as a 'Mr Fix-It' at Slater's family holiday park in a British coastal resort, with Sooty, Sweep and Soo always ready and willing to help him.

The first episode aired on 5 September 2011, and the series is currently airing weekdays at 10:10am and 1:25pm on the CITV Channel. The series also airs every Sunday at 7:00am on ITV1.

Cast

  • Richard Cadell - presenter
  • Sooty - a mute yellow bear who is the protagonist of the show. He owns a magic wand whose power is invoked using the words "Izzy wizzy, let's get busy".
  • Sweep - a dim-witted grey dog with a penchant for bones and sausages. He wears red wellingtons and communicates using bizarre squeaks.
  • Soo - a calm and collected female panda who acts as the foil for both Sooty and Sweep. Usually wears a red skirt. Voiced by Brenda Longman.

Trivia

  • Early licensing material gave the series the name 'Sooty and Sweep', which is believed to be the working title for the show.
  • The series features many guest stars; Stacey Solomon; Justin Lee Collins, Keith Chegwin, John Shuttleworth, Paul Daniels, Debbie McGee, Brendan Cole, Matthew Corbett, Frank Bruno and Ann Widdecombe all appear in the first series.
  • A DVD special, starring Richard Cadell and also set at a theme park, entitled "Sooty - The Big Day Out" was released in 2010, and acted as the pilot for the series.
  • Scampi, Butch, Ramsbottom and Sweep's mum and dad made cameos in the "The Wedding".
  • Several of the routines in the show are taken from the original Harry Corbett scripts.
  • Each episode was originally planned to be 18 minutes long, but due to the time slot allocated by CITV, elements that did not move the story forward were cut from the script.
