Commissioning

The USS Housatonic (SP-1697) was built in 1899 and commissioned by the United States Navy in 1918. She was built in 1899 by Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock Co., Norfolk, Virginia. [1] The Housatonic served as a mine planter to the Navy as a part of the Navy's 3rd Naval District until 5 August 1919. The ship engaged in laying mines in the North Sea during World War I. Her Commanding officer John Greenslade was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal while aboard the ship.[2]
