The Chinese University of Hong Kong (abbreviation: CUHK; Chinese: 香港中文大學; Cantonese: IPA: [hœŋ55 kɔŋ35 tsʊŋ55 mɐn11 tɑɪ22 hɔk22], Jyutping: hoeng1 gong2 jung1 man4 dai6 hok6; Mandarin Pinyin: Xiānggǎng Zhōngwén Dàxué) is the second oldest of the eight universities in Hong Kong. It is located at Ma Liu Shui, Sha Tin District, New Territories, Hong Kong. CUHK was founded in 1963 when New Asia College(新亞書院) (1949), Chung Chi College(崇基學院) (1951) and United College(聯合書院) (1956) were amalgamated. Shaw College (1986) was created and joined in 1986.

Overview

Despite the name, English is also the official language of instruction in the University, along with Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese). Local students are expected to be proficient in all three languages; similarly, most staff are proficient in English.

The CUHK is a comprehensive-research university offering 53 full time honours degrees, 2 part time programmes, and 37 undergraduate level minor options. The provision of postgraduate level education has long been part and parcel of the University's curriculum; there are altogether 12 Postgraduate Diploma programmes, 132 master's level degrees, including both taught and research programmes, and 62 Doctor of Philosophy programmes. All undergraduates, in addition to one major and at most two minors at their choosing, have to fulfil a series of assessment tests in respect to general education, sports, language , and information technology.

The motto of the University is 博文約禮, which translates as "to broaden one's intellectual horizon and keep within the bounds of propriety". These words, which come from the Analects of Confucius, suggest that both intellectual and moral aspects of life are emphasised in the school's teaching.

The campus is located at the bay of Tolo Harbour north of Shatin in the New Territories. It occupies a total area of 1.344 square kilometres.

The CUHK hosts one of only two medical schools in Hong Kong, the other being at the University of Hong Kong. The newly-established Law School will admit its first batch of LLB students in 2006. The postgraduate programmes JD, LLM, MPhil and PhD are also receiving their first cohorts of students in 2006. THe PCLL Programme will be available as from 2007.

The University owns its own journal, the Chinese University Press, whereby a wide range of literature and academic papers have been published.

Undergraduate degree programmes in Hong Kong tertiary institutions require at least 3 years of study, CUHK being no exception. The University also offers 1- to 2-year postgraduate programmes, with a few 3- to 4- years teaching-cum-research doctorate programmes also available. MPhil programmes require students to spend at least 2 full years in residence, 3 full years for PhD candidates.

The Kowloon Canton Railway provides train services to the University in Ma Liu Shui, the New Territories at the University Station. There is a town centre in Admiralty, Hong Kong Island, specializing for provision of continuous study programmes and MBA programmes, as well as occasional academic activities. The University's Community College, offering pre-degree (Associate Degree) training, situates in the heart of Mong Kok, Kowloon. Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin is the teaching hospital and medical research base for the Medical Faculty.
