The Gerson High School, with a history dating back to 1970, offers an alternative educational experience for adolescents in grades 9 - 12 who, for various personal, behavioral and/or relationship reasons, have not been successful in standard school settings. Most students have average to above-average abilities, but exhibit characteristics such as:
* Depression * Being bullied * Intense anxiety * History of school absences * Suicidal ideation * Tendency to internalize
The Gerson High School, fully accredited by the state of Ohio, emphasizes education within a personal and therapeutic environment to affect positive growth in each student. An individual course of study is developed, and each student is assigned a faculty advisor who provides monitoring, evaluation and support. Faculty is certified in special education and come from the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County, Applewood Centers and Cleveland Metropolitan Schools.
Also, students who are not "accepted" in their school district that they reside in are often sent here. This may be due to not conforming to the "mainstream" (Whether it be dress-code (hair color, make up, way of dressing), not having "school spirit", refusing to think within the box because that's what their administrators say to do, or if their school district thinks they're too "different". School districts often send students here when they want to "hide" the fact that there are some students, that can think for themselves, without having to be told how to think/act/learn by an administrator.

The Gerson school offers smaller classes, usually having no more than ten students per class. This helps maintain a personal connection between student and teacher (which is a load of bull). Having more one on one time helps the students learn not only more efficiently, but they gain more knowledge. The teachers there are more than just teachers, teachers go by their first name at Gerson. This adds to the personal connection of student to teacher, the students don't feel in-superior to the teachers, yet maintain respect for them non the less. This tactic, of letting the students address the teachers by their first name, also gives the student an illusion of equality when nothing could be farther from the truth.
There is a better chance graduating from Gerson, because unlike mainstream schools, they do not give up on their students and continue to help them, even after graduation.
