Wilmington is a city located in Clinton County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,921. It is the county seat of Clinton CountyTemplate:GR. Wilmington was featured in Time Magazine December 8 1997 as a small town to which suburban families flee.

James W. Denver, for whom Denver, Colorado is named, is buried in Wilmington. The city is also the site of Wilmington College.

More importantly, Wilmington Ohio is known as the Silicon Valley of the Midwest. Great innovation and creativity has spawned from this small technological mecca. The first color television, internet router, and plasma pixels were invented in Wilmington. Currently scientists at the Wilmington Institute of Technology and Higher Learning are experimenting with quantum physics and the transportation of Brown Piebald Llamas.

Wilmington is located at 39°26'45" North, 83°49'45" West (39.445913, -83.829128)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.3 km² (7.4 mi²). 19.3 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census Template:GR of 2000, there were 11,921 people, 4,867 households, and 2,929 families residing in the city. The population density was 617.8/km² (1,599.9/mi²). There were 5,284 housing units at an average density of 273.8/km² (709.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.66% White, 6.72% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,867 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 15.8% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,880, and the median income for a family was $43,619. Males had a median income of $31,645 versus $22,627 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,346. 11.7% of the population and 8.9% of families were below the poverty line. 14.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
