Changes of names unclear

The History section of this article is very confusing, with the various name changes, and is not helped by referring to 'the former', 'the latter', and also bringing new names of splits in without proper reference. I would love to tidy it up but do not know the history well enough to do so without risk of error. Can someone more informed than me clean it up so that it reads clearly and plainly!
