"Now We're Even"

"Now We're Even" is the twenty-first episode of the seventh season of the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, and the 157th episode overall. It is scheduled to air on April 16, 2012.[1]

Plot

Barney tries to lure Ted into going out every night, even as Ted tries getting used to living in his new apartment alone. Lily has a naughty dream, and its not Marshall. Robin finally starts her stint as a news anchor at World Wide News.[1]

Continuity

  • In a flash-forward in the season 6 episode "The Mermaid Theory", Ted walks into the bar wearing a green dress and exclaims "Now We're Even!", though Future Ted says that’s a story for another time.
  • In "The Mermaid Theory," Future Ted finally remembered that the Lily and Barney rift happened when Lily was pregnant.

Conception of the Green Dress/Now We're Even Storyline

Show co-creator Craig Thomas and writer Chris Harris spoke about the situation setup in The Mermaid Theory in the Podcast for the episode Tick Tick Tick. Chris said that Ted's character was setup in that way to "set challenges up for ourselves in the future ... purposely boxing ourselves." as in The Goatfor instance. Craig said, "... we have a few ideas; but I'll be honest ... when we did it, it was just 'lets push ourselves into a corner' ... it was just a challenge to future us". Chris added, "And we know he has to say 'Now We're Even'". Craig admitted that it was puzzling approaching the story at first since Ted (Josh Radnor) seemed excited saying "Now We're Even" instead of being miserable, "like a real big gotcha".
