Perch was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He was educated at Sherwood Hall Upper School. He is a product of the Nottingham Forest youth academy. He is very versatile and has played in a number of different positions at the City Ground. Though he started off a striker in the Forest academy, he was moved to right-back as a cover and played well there; he's also known for being good in goal. The right-back position stuck for a while, but when he broke into the first team, he played as a central defender. Perch made his debut for the Nottingham Forest reserves in 2001. He scored two goals and almost scored a hat-trick when he went through on goal and forced Newcastle United goalkeeper James Pickering into a great save. Perch's game went sour when he was sent off for violent conduct for seemingly head-butting Sacha Stephenson, which resulted in a brawl between Forest defender Richard Woodward and Newcastle striker Tim Ivil. Referee Tanzil Aslam later endorsed the red card being rescinded after being shown video evidence.[2]
In 2004, he was linked with a move to Levante but the move never materialised. Early in the 2005–06 season he found himself at left-back to cover for an injured John Curtis, but has since gone on to play in a more defensive midfield role, and also played on both wings.
Perch had a good season with Forest in the 2006–07 campaign. He was a virtual ever-present for the team and netted five goals in all for the season. He came third place in the fans' player of the season, behind the winner Grant Holt. However, Perch has been demoted to the bench in the 2007–08 campaign with the influx of new signings. He came off the bench often and occasionally started in which he helped The Reds finish second in League One, seeing Forest gain automatic promotion to the Championship.
In the 2008–09 season, Perch scored Forest's first league goal of the season in their 3–1 loss at Swansea City. Perch mainly played in midfield in 2008–09 but appeared in right-back after cementing himself as a first-team regular again. He scored his 10th league goal for the club in his 150th league appearance for The Reds, with a diving header in Forest's 1–1 home draw against Birmingham City in November 2008.
Perch was Forest's second-longest serving player, behind Wes Morgan and was the club's captain after the sacking of former manager Colin Calderwood. By the end of the 2008–09 season, he had made a total of 199 appearances in all competitions for Nottingham Forest, playing in various positions including midfield and defence, playing at centre back and right back.
Due to a heel injury, he was forced to miss the team's pre-season trip to Portugal; it was later confimed that he would miss around three months of the 2009–10 season. His first action of the 2009–10 season was to commentate on the annual pre-season friendly between Forest and Notts County.
Newcastle United
On 5 July 2010, Perch signed for Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £1 million, on a four-year deal.[3] He wears the squad number 14. He made his debut for Newcastle against Manchester United on 16 August 2010.[4] On 18 September 2010, he set a new Premier League record by being the first player ever to receive five yellow cards in his first five games in the league.[5] The previous record was held by Edgar Davids who received four consecutive yellows in as many games since his debut for Tottenham. His disappointing form continued, with him scoring a late own goal in his sixth match (return from suspension) to hand Stoke City an away win at St. James' Park. Perch kept his place in the line up, but was dropped after his display at home to Wigan Athletic in a 2–2 draw, after being at fault for one goal and struggling up against Charles N'Zogbia. He was replaced by Danny Simpson for the 2–1 win over West Ham United. James came on against Chelsea to make his first appearance in the Premier league for a long time.
In the 2011-12 season, Perch was left on the fringes of the first team. However, he featured more after Steven Taylor's injury which ruled him out for the whole season. Unlike the previous season, Perch seemed adjusted and consistent in his appearances, despite him playing in different positions such as left back and centre midfield. As a result, he has grown into a valuable asset for Newcastle, featuring on the bench for most games and coming on late on to shore up the defense. As a result of his strong performances in defense he has been voted man of the match on several Newcastle website's polls developing a cult following along Newcastle fans whom regularly chant "We have Perchinho" a reference to the highly skilled Ronaldinho & Robinho.
On 1 April 2012, Perch was involved in an altercation with Liverpool's Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, where Perch was seen to have been headbutted; the referee witness to this showed the Liverpool player a red card. Replays later showed that Perch had exaggerated the contact made by Reina. This quickly caused world wide attention to his antics, Google was soon filled with pictures of his diving antics www.google.com/search?q=james+perch Liverpools Glen Johnson openly blamed Perch http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/9180855/Liverpools-Glen-Johnson-blames-James-Perch-for-Pepe-Reinas-suspension.html and later on Perch tried to defence his world-wide deemed diving antics http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11661/7651577/Perch-I-m-no-diver even tough public opinions, as with pretty much everyone who has eyes, still strongly succest that he has no place in British Football.
