Purpose of use |
The image illustrates Emmett Till, 13 years old at the time, as he looked on Christmas Day 1954. Six months later Till was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi when he reportedly flirted with or offended a white woman. Her husband and his half-brother took Till from his great-uncle's house, beat him to the point of disfigurement, shot him in the head, and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie River. The image is one that often identified Till to the press. Mamie Till Bradley discussed the image during the trial of her son's murders in which they were acquitted. The image is used to identify the subject of the article. |
