The Child's Primary School, also known as TCPS, a non-profit private independent school located in the Clairemont community of San Diego. The school offers grades kindergarten through eighth grade for nearly 100 students.

History

The Child's Primary School (TCPS) was founded in 1983 based on the principals of value and respect for the individual uniqueness of each child. Founders Maggie Price and Sherry Risch brought to fruition their dream of founding an elementary school which celebrates the child as a unique individual. Because of their founding philosophy and principles of teaching it was decided the most suitable name for the school would be The Child's Primary School, because at their school, the child is primary.

Originally located just north of downtown San Diego in the neighborhood of Hillcrest, TCPS welcomed its first class of just 6 students. In the early 90's, TCPS outgrew the original campus and moved to the community of Clairemont, San Diego. Through the years, the school has grown and expanded to include grades K-8 but has maintained its small community of less than 100 students and a teacher to student ratio of 1:8.

Founders Maggie Price and Sherry Risch are still active in the school. Maggie Price remains the first grade teacher and Sherry Risch is the School Principal and middle school Language Arts teacher.

Curriculum

TCPS follows the standards for curriculum set by the State of California and also has the flexibility to include additional lessons based on student interest and current events. In addition to reading, writing, and arithmatic, TCPS students also have physical education, fine arts, foreign language, music, science, library, and honors math classes. A donation made to the school allows for each student to have access to a laptop or a netbook, which teachers often integrate into their curriculum following the National Educational Technology Standards.

Each year, students and staff members produce a one-day event which has been named, The Big Event. The Big Event is a school-wide research project presentation in which friends and family are invited to attend. Some examples of previous Big Event themes include, "A Continental Journey", "The #1 Big Event", "Art Galleries", "Counting By 10's", and "Speaking Spanish".
