Wikipedia:Highbeam/Nav

Round 1 closed April 9th. Sign up for round 2 below.

This page is designed to manage the applications process for editors who want access to a free, full-access, 1-year HighBeam Research account. HighBeam has indicated that they will defer to the community's judgment about which editors will qualify for a free account. Because they do not have a strict limit on the number of free accounts they are willing to give us (they've initially authorized 1000), there is unlikely to be a problem of too many editors trying to get too few accounts. The criteria and an explanation of the application process are listed below.

Requirements
  • You do not have free online access to HighBeam through your local library or university
  • You have your Wikipedia email enabled to receive messages (see Special:Preferences)
  • You have an account that is a minimum of 1 year old
  • You have a minimum of 1000 edits to the encyclopedia
  • Ideally, you are active in content generation, research, and verification work.
Process
  • Promotion of the application process will begin on March 13, 2012
  • The free accounts will be widely advertised on Wikipedia community pages, content portals, wikiprojects, mailing lists, and available media (Signpost, Wikimedia Blog)
  • Applications will officially open on Monday April 2, 2012 at 10am Eastern Standard Time (EST) and remain open until Monday April 9 at 12pm EST.
  • Applications will not be given on a first-come first serve basis; in the unlikely event that there are more eligible editors than accounts, they will be assigned randomly
  • Account access codes will be emailed to all participants by Monday April 16 at 12pm EST
Expectations for use
  • All editors are encouraged to apply where they have a need for background reading, research, verification, or content writing
  • Editors should try out and use the HighBeam account during their free access period
  • Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking a HighBeam article, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
  • Editors should not provide bare links to non-free HighBeam pages
  • Editors should note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • Your application suggests you've read this and will give it a fair shot :)

Example application

  1. [[User:Name]]. Active Wikimedia project(s). History of content, research, or verification work. Intentions for future research.
  2. User:Ocaasi. English Wikipedia. I write biographies about alternative medicine practitioners and Middle Eastern political activists. I intend to continue this work, specifically writing about Gabriel Cousens and the Egyptian presidential election, 2012. Ocaasi t | c 21:37, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Applications--April 9th round (delivered by the 16th)

If there is a shortage, applications will be given on a random basis to all who meet the basic qualifications. 87. Simon Burchell: Been around since 2006, but not really active until 2008, with 29,000 edits. 4 FAs and a dozen or so GAs. I also sporadically spend time on the Spanish wikipedia. I'm constantly frustrated by paywalls, and any extra resource would be a great help. I'm particularly active in WikiProjects Mesoamerica and Guatemala with the addition of new material. I do a lot of article assessment on WikiProject Mythology, I also write up the odd British archaeological site. Simon Burchell (talk) 23:59, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do a lot of maintenance work, but I find paid databases to be extremely useful when I do content work. I don't have access to HighBeam through my uni, so it would be quite nice! I don't work in any specific area, but I have two GAs, and am working on making one a FA. GorillaWarfare (talk) 02:37, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  96. Grapple X—active since October 2010 (~17 months), over 8,000 edits in this time. Active in content generation and improvement (60 GA-class articles, 1 FA, 1 FL at time of application). Would make use of newspaper archives mainly for the review history of film and television topics, though use of such a tool would probably light a fire under my ass to research more "important" topics as well. 103. Orlady. American; editor in the English Wikipedia since 2004; active since 2006; currently administrator; well over 60,000 total edits. Most of my work is in creation and improvement of content in a diverse variety of topical areas, mostly related to current topics or the last couple of centuries -- roughly corresponding to the period covered by HighBeam archives. I don't have access to any university libraries and my access to paywall-protected Internet content is rather limited, but I am skilled at locating information on the free Internet. I have found archived articles from newspapers and magazines published in the last two centuries to be valuable resources for research, particularly in the subject areas of history, politics, biography, and business. Access to HighBeam resources would definitely increase the stature of the sources I use, as I would have less need to rely on articles from small-city local newspapers that happen to have been archived at Google Books. --Orlady (talk) 05:36, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have been available as a direct contact on WP:REX for over a year (I would encourage more people to put their names there if they want to help with sourcing and verification) and regularly check things up for others using the British Library as I am the point of contact for the GLAM programme there (as well as other UK institutions). I do regular content creation, particularly fixing unreferenced biographies (although there's less of that to do now) and preparing articles for WP:ITN, which can include adding a lot of background and fixing general problems as well as updating the news-y bit. On my to do list at the moment is improving some articles to do with linguistics and the Sex Pistols (as two separate topics, if you were wondering). FormerIP (talk) 15:56, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  115. Yngvadottir Primarily en.wikipedia - created one page on de.wikipedia but the comments on my German were scathing so I have returned to just gnoming on other Wikipedias ... Editor since July 2, 2008, 8,000+ edits, by my own count I've created 100 pages and I also do a lot of page expansions (including attempting to save articles at AfD). I'm extremely eclectic, except that I am not qualified to do much that's scientific/technical. I don't have access to any online archives through my local library and have no academic library affiliation, so I could really use help seeing newspaper articles. 418. User:Lothar von Richthofen. English Wikipedia mostly, occasionally Commons, a smattering of edits at German Wikipedia. Over 10,000 edits at en-wp since March 2009. Lots of copyediting, some translation and content creation work in the area of military history and European topics. Content creation has been hindered thus far by limited access to sources; have plans to get Wikipedia:WikiProject Frisia on the map over the summer by improving articles up to GA or higher. This would help greatly with both. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 00:50, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  426. User:Neotarf. While I am a somewhat newer user than preferred, I am placing my request here in case there are extra subscriptions available. Like many newer users, I prefer creating new content to maintaining existing articles. My first article, although still in somewhat rough form, has already gotten 700-some hits in less than two months, and the topic has since been covered by the English-speaking mainstream media for the first time, in part, I believe, because of the extensive sourcing I did on the article. In the near future, I plan to write about several contemporary artists. My main interests are human rights, the Middle East, and Wikipedia article titling policy. I live in a region where the internet is heavily censored, and have no access to sources outside of the internet. Neotarf (talk) 16:45, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  428. User:Kyteto. Unrestricted access to this large archive would be greatly appreciated in my chosen field of interest, overhauling and refitting aircraft articles, in coordination with WP:Aircraft. Over the last four years I have worked extensively on many articles to improve content quality and especially verification, I feel I have made a real difference to 30-40 or so articles, which I have linked on my userpage for prosterity. I plan to be heavily editing more articles in the future, and another tool in my arsenal would enable my efforts to go further and add more to these articles. On countless research runs on different aviation matters I have encountered Highbeam articles, it would be far easier to use and incorperate them as sources if I could actually view the majority of the content instead of a restricted preview. While working for the guild I spend a lot of time, not only making grammatical repairs, but also adding additional citations when I can, as well as confirming cites of more controversial material. If you are using X!'s edit counter, you can see that the majority of my edits (over 50%) have been to articles themselves, and that of all of those edits, only 1.3% of them have been reverted. As a history student, I take citation of source matters very seriously. There are several different areas on WP that I would like to spend more time on, but I do enjoy copyediting as it gives me a chance to see many new articles that I may not have normally encountered, and I enjoy making those articles better when I can, this resource should help tremendously. I also edit when I am away from my home PC and can provide you with proof if needed, I have hundreds of other edits that don't have my username attached (just in case that edit counter of just over 900 was a possible problem). -- Despayre  tête-à-tête 22:53, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've been editing since 2006, have about 140,000 edits, and my focus is on editing medical articles, which typically requires access to full text of journal articles. Along with resigning as FAC delegate so I could focus more on medical articles, I also have recently relocated and have no access to a medical library or journal databases. I have also recently begun new page patrolling of medical articles, and while I often encounter what looks like copyvio, I'm unable to doublecheck journal articles.
