History

Saint Petersburg Lyceum 30 main building at early 1900s

The history of current 30 Physics and Mathematics Lyceum on Vasilyevsky Island began October 6, 1897 when the first city 12-grade primary school for 600 students named after Catherine II was found. It was placed at Sredniy prospect 31. It was a very significant event in the history of the city seeking to solve a number of existed primary education problems.[1] The initiative of building first school having several classes in St. Petersburg, where both classes of boys and girls should be present, belonged to Mikhail Matveevich Stasyulevich, a prominent historian, publisher, public figure, chairman of the Commission on Public Education in 1890. However Mikhail Matveevich had found many opponents, and he had to fight hard with the defenders of the old type of primary school. The most serious objection was an indication of the "great danger schools having several classes as the source of infectious diseases." But the project has been supported by City Council. The Emperor Nikolay II familiarized with the project and approved it by himself. A member of the Commission A.R.Geshvend was elected as an architect of school building. Work started without delay, 24 May 1896 and was completed in September of the next year - that was a record for that time. October 6, 1897 School has been opened for the children. While the solemn opening of it with the blessing of the home church has taken place November 9. The school was named after the Empress Catherine II, because the 100th anniversary of her death was celebrated in 1896.

In 1965 the school became specialized in math. In 1976 the school was united with School 38 and moved to the other building at Shevchenko street, 23/2. At that moment it became Physico-Mathematical School. In 1990 it was renamed to Physico-Mathematical Gymnasium but in 2002 it was finally renamed to Physico-Mathematical Lyceum. In 2005 the school got back it's historical building at Sredniy prospect and from that moment it has 2 buildings: the first at Shevchenko street where classes from 5 to 8 are being studing and the second near Vasileostrovskaya metro station where classes from 9 to 11 are situated.
