Parentocracy is defined as 'a system whereby the education a child recieves must conform to the wealth and the wishes of parents rather than the abilities and efforts of pupils' (Brown, 1990:65). It can be compared to a meritocracy, in which educational and financial rewards are distributed according to abilities and efforts.
