Wootton is a village and civil parish in Staffordshire, England.[2] The village is situated approximately 20 miles (30km) east from Stoke-on-Trent and 20 miles (30km) northwest from Derby.

History

Toponymy

The name Wootton comes from the Old English wudu meaning wood and tūn meaning an enclosure; farmstead; village or estate. This translates to Wood Farm/Settlement. [3] [4]

Industry

In early reports Wootton was predominately a farming village, with over 60% of males engaged in agriculture. [5] [6] Even to this day there remains a large farming culture, with still around 60% of the working male population engaged in agriculture. [7]

Notable Buildings

The 17th century house Wootton Lodge is a grade I listed building in the parish.[8]

Transport

Wootton is located just off the B5032 to Ashbourne and is served by the 432 bus service from Stafford Town Centre to Knightley. [9] There is a local train station in Stafford around 20 miles (32 km) which has regular trains to Crewe, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and London. [10]
