From its establishment in 1977 until 1996, the post was known as the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, whilst between 1996 until 2012, the post was known as the Minister of National Infrastructure. The current minister is Uzi Landau of Yisrael Beiteinu.

It succeeded the position of Development Minister, which had been scrapped three years earlier. There has been a Deputy Minister only once.
