The 2012 Spanish Grand Prix (formally the Formula 1 Gran Premio de España Santander 2012)[1] is a Formula One motor race that will be held on 13 May 2012 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.[2] It will be the fifth round of the 2012 season, and the twenty-second time the Spanish Grand Prix has been held at the circuit. The race will be supported by the GP2 and GP3 Series.[3][4]

Report

Background

The race was predeced by a four-day test at the Mugello Circuit in Italy, starting on 1 May.[5] The test saw teams introduce major aerodynamic upgrades ahead of the race.[6][7]

Following criticism over the extreme sensitivity of their tyre compounds,[8] tyre supplier Pirelli announced that they would be providing teams with the hard and soft compounds for the Spanish Grand Prix, as opposed to the soft and medium tyres they had supplied for previous races in the season.[9]

Alexander Rossi replaced Heikki Kovalainen at Caterham for the first Friday practice session.[10] Dani Clos replaced HRT's Narain Karthikeyan in the same session.[11]
