Artur Szpilka nickname "Szpila" [eng. "The Pin"] (born 12 April 1989 in Wieliczka) is a Polish professional southpaw boxer in Heavyweight division now of North Bergen, NJ. He fought for Górnik Wieliczka, and is the former cruiserweight champion of Poland.
Career
He ended up boxing only by pure coincidence – he was the fan of the soccer team Wisła Kraków. Spotted as the great talent by a boxing coach when fighting with pseudo-fans of Cracovia outside of a disco in his home town Wieliczka. The boxing trainer had noticed his exceptional skills and suggested him to give it a try at the ring. As a result Artur Szpilka has signed a contract with Bullit KnockOut Promotions group.
Szpilka's career was interrupted in October 2009, before the bout with Wojciech Bartnik was cancelled as Szpilka was arrested during the weigh-in for his match on the undercard of the battle between his countrymen Tomasz Adamek and Andrew Golota in Łódź, Poland. Szpilka was charged for his role in a brawl between soccer hooligans supporting his team and bitter rivals Cracovia and sentenced to 18 months in jail.[citation needed]
Szpilka stated: "During that time, I realized just what I had lost and began to appreciate boxing more. I kept fit by doing pull-ups, pushups and lifting weights in prison, which helped me build up my upper body strength and punching power. Now I'm hungrier than ever before."[citation needed]
Szpilka came to the attention of the worlds media in February of 2012 after challenging Dereck Chisora with words "’I called around to my promoter Andrew Wasilewski, asking if I could arrange a fight (with Chisora). That would be a great match of two bullies, and the action would be not only in the ring, but also at the weigh-in and press conferences. It is possible that this would be two or three fights."
Professional boxing record
His fight scheduled for 24 October 2009 with Wojciech Bartnik was cancelled as Artur Szpilka prior to fight was arrested and went to prison to serve therm for violation of his conviction for brawl in front of a Disco in his hometown at Wieliczka.[1]
