Helsinki Metropolitan Area

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area is a very close combination of cities around Helsinki, Finland, which form the largest urbanized area in the country. The population of the metropolitan area is 976,222 (as of 2003-12-31). The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council serves as a co-operation agency of the area, mainly providing for regional public transport and waste management services.

Municipalities

The Metropolitan Area covers four municipalities: (Swedish names in parentesis.)

Sometimes also the neighbouring municipalities of Järvenpää, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Nurmijärvi, Sipoo, and Tuusula are regarded as being part of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, because they are in close contact with Helsinki.
