Robert Fitzsimmons won the light heavyweight, middleweight and heavyweight.

In boxing, a triple champion is a boxer who has won world titles in three different weight classes. For most of the 20th century it was a remarkable achievement, possibly securing one a spot in the Boxing Hall of Fame with other immortals of the sport. Beginning in the 1970s, Triple Champions have become increasingly more common because of the numerous weight divisions (17) and the countless professional boxing entities that claim a "World" championship.

Example: Wilfredo Gómez won his first belt at 122 pounds. Later he won the 126-pound crown and finally won the 130-pound title as well.

The first Triple Champion of boxing was Bob Fitzsimmons when he added the Light Heavyweight crown to his World Middleweight and Heavyweight belts on November 25, 1903.

Barney Ross was the first boxer to simultaneously hold world titles in two different weight classes when he won 135-pound World Lightweight Title and 140-pound World Light Welterweight against Tony Canzoneri on June 23, 1933. Later Ross won the 147-pound World Welterweight Title from Jimmy McLarnin on May 28, 1934.

Henry Armstrong was the first man to hold three titles in three divisions simultaneously. He won the World Featherweight Title from Petey Sarron on October 29, 1937, the World Welterweight Title from Barney Ross on May 31, 1938, and won the World Lightweight Title in his next fight, on August 17 against Lou Ambers. Armstrong then immediately vacated the Featherweight Title because he could no longer make the weight.

Wilfred Benítez was the youngest ever champion at any weight. Benitez first won the 140-pound WBA Light Welterweight Title from Antonio Cervantes on March 6, 1976, at age 17. He moved up in weight to win the 147-pound WBC Welterweight Title from Carlos Palomino on January 14, 1979, and finally won a third title when he added the 154-pound WBC Light Middleweight Title from Maurice Hope on May 23, 1981.

Recognition

The following lists are for all boxers who have won championships from the regular major entities (including The Ring) and/or minor associations and other criteria.

The phrase Triple Crown is also used to refer to a fighter who has performed one or both of the following feats:

  • Different Divisions - A fighter who has won championships in at least 3 different weight classes. Example: Mike McCallum who won the Light middleweight title, the Middleweight title and the Light heavyweight title.
  • Same Division - A fighter who has won at least 3 titles in the same weight class. Example: Pernell Whitaker won the unified crown of the Lightweight division when adding the WBC and the WBA titles to his already captured IBF belt. In other words, Whitaker was a Triple Champion in the Lightweight division alone, a single weight class. Another example: Evander Holyfield who never was a triple champion in three different weight divisions but was a triple champion in a single division when he added the WBA and the WBC belt to his IBF Cruiserweight crown.

In the late 20th and early 21st Century this feat has become much more common for two reasons:

The fighters that compose this group are classified in two different categories depending on the level of championships won:

The following are the lists of boxers who have won three different titles in three totally different categories of weight.

List of Triple Champions (short) — Major Titles

List of Boxing Triple or Three Division Champions — Minor + Major Titles

  • The first column of the extreme left (Major titles only) refers to championships won from only major boxing entities such the WBC, the WBA, the IBF the WBO and The Ring. They are the organizations that generally considered as the 'real' ones.
  • The second column of the extreme left (Minor and Major titles) refers to any championships won from professional 'minor' boxing associations that are not yet well respected by the general boxing fan or public at 'world' level. Some of them, despite having tremendous champions and superstars that sometimes eclipse the champions of the major entities, are still in the shadows. Please, see the List of Minor Boxing Entities of the Triple Champions in this page.
  • Only the first championship by Boxing weight-class is added to the fighter not matter he later obtain or win additional belts in the same division.

Example: Sugar Ray Leonard is a five(5)-time world champion in five(5) different weight categories:

  • He won his first title (147 pounds/WBC welterweight belt) in 1979-11-30 against Wilfred Benítez but later he also added the WBA Welterweight version from Thomas Hearns in 1981-09-16. So because Welterweight is the same division, not matter the boxing regulating body, his first championship counts only to proclaim him as the world Welterweight champ or two times Welter champion.
  • Leonard also won the world WBA light middleweight title (154 pounds) from Ayub Kalule in 1981-06-25 but he does not needed to win a second belt at this weight to be considered champion, so he is a one time world Light middleweight champ.

Example: Pernell Whitaker is a four(4)-time champion in four(4) different divisions:

  • His first ever title was the world IBF lightweight title (135 pounds) at 1989-02-18 from Greg Haugen. Whitaker also won the other two versions (WBA/1990-08-11 from Juan Nazario & WBC/1989-08-20 versus José Luis Ramírez) of the world Lightweight title in the same division, but only will be included here the very first title (1989-02-18). So Whitaker is a three(3)times world champion in one weight division (Lightweight), but is a six(6) times champion in four(4) different divisions.
  • And every new title in different weight divisions will be only accepted in this list to proclaim the champions in multiple divisions.

Example: Vinny Pazienza is a three(3)times world champion in three different divisions:

  • Pazienza's first belt was for the IBF lightweight title(135) at 1987-06-07 from Greg Haugen. The IBF title is considered a legitimate world title such the WBC, the WBA and the WBO.
  • He won the WBA light middleweight title(154) at 1991-10-01 from Gilbert Dele. It's his second world title in two(2)different divisions.
  • His next 'world' title was the IBO Super Middleweight Title(168)in 1993-12-28 from Dan Sherry. The IBO is still not recognized as a real 'world' association by the boxing fans, national commissions and writers. But I added Pazienza's three(3) titles in three(3)different weight divisions because all the titles are professional ones and because maybe one day that 'world' titles will be legitimate recognised by the World.

List of Triple Champions (short) — Minor Titles + Major Titles

Note:

  • The Super Featherweight (130 lbs) World Title of Manny Pacquiao runs a fourth major world title (not as third) in four totally different weight divisions. Pacquiao's third world title was The Ring World Featherweight Title after defeating Marco Antonio Barrera on November 15, 2003. Please, see the List of The Ring world champions to confirm this fact.
  • The IBF World Cruiserweight (200 lbs) Title of James Toney, which he won on April 26, 2003 against Vassiliy Jirov, was included in the list of major titles as his third major world title. However, his WBU Light Heavyweight (175 lbs) Title, that considered as a minor world title which he won on August 9, 1996 against Freddie Delgado, is chronologically included in the list of minor + major titles as his third world title instead of his IBF World Cruiserweight Title.
  • The Ring World Lightweight (135 lbs) Title of Juan Manuel Márquez that he won against Joel Casamayor on September 13, 2008 ran as the third major world title because The Ring recognized him, after defeating Casamayor, as the lineal champion in lightweight division. Please, see the List of The Ring world champions to verify this fact. But he eventually defeated Juan Díaz on February 28, 2009 and won another major world title at lightweight division.
  • The WBC Flyweight Interim Title of Jorge Arce, which he won against Angel Antonio Priolo on July 30, 2005 and defended four times, ran as the second major world title; while the WBA Super Flyweight Interim Title, which he won against Rafael Concepcion on September 15, 2008, ran as the third major world title. However, he won another super flyweight world title from WBO on January 30, 2010.

Group of Almost Triple Champions

This is the "Suggested" term that could be given to the group of boxers who won championship titles in two divisions and almost won three championship titles in three divisions.

  • This list consist only of any boxer that tried in futile to become a champion in three different weight divisions. They all are Double Champions in two different divisions or weights. All their attempts to win a third division belt are documented in the following list.
  • For example: Hilario Zapata (champion in 108 Light flyweight & 112 Flyweight) tried unsuccessfully to win the 115 world title from the 115 WBC Super Flyweight Titlist Sung-Kil Moon Seoul at 1993-02-27. Zapata only tried the feat in the next higher division. He never tried a second (or third) different division moving up in weight.
  • Another example: Hiroki Ioka who was champion at 105 & 108 Light flyweight and tried to obtain the third divisions title against three different world champions (David Griman, Saen Sor Ploenchit & Jose Bonilla) at 112 but losing all his respective efforts, plus trying to add anyway a third title in a still different weight category Super Flyweight against one champ(Satoshi Iida) although the result was again a lost.
