In 1874, Jerusalem became a Mutasarrifate (or Mutesarrifiyyet), gaining a special administrative status. The administrative area was previously functioning as a Sanjak, within the Syria Vilayet (created in 1864, following the Tanzimat reforms).
Together with the Sanjaks of Nablus and Acre, the area was related during the period as Southern Syria, later conquered by the British and transformed to be part of the Mandatory Palestine
