"Goin' In"
Song

"Goin' In" is a song by American recording artist Jennifer Lopez from the soundtrack of the upcoming dance film Step Up Revolution (2012). The song features American rappers Flo Rida and Lil Jon, although the later is uncredited for his part in the song. It was co-written by Joseph Angel, Tramar Dillard, David Quiñones, Coleridge Tillman, Warren Michael and Jamahl "GoonRock" Listenbee, who also produced the song.

Background and release

On April 27, 2012 Digital Spy reported that Lopez had recorded two songs produced by GoonRock (who is well known for working with electropop duo LMFAO on their international hit songs "Party Rock Anthem" and "Sexy and I Know It") and written by Ryan Tedder: "Clothes Off" and "Goin' In".[1] On May 10, GoonRock posted a message on his Twitter account "Crazy day finishing 2012 's Song of the Summer for @jlo and @Official_flo #goinin."[2] The song made its radio premiere on May 24, 2012 on Ryan Seacrest's radio show On Air with Ryan Seacrest. The song will be made available for purchase on June 19, 2012.[3]

Recording

Of the song's producer, Lopez commented by stating that he is "very forward with his sound". After recording her vocals for the song, Flo Rida recorded guest vocals for the song. Those involved in the production of the song were extremely happy with the song before Flo Rida's rap appeared on it, but once his vocals were on the song it "took it over the top top".[4]

Lopez stated that when it comes time to make an album, she doesn't sit down and write music for the entire thing. She joked, "I owe a greatest hits [album] to the record company... or I can go ahead and start a new album. I just haven't decided yet." Instead, Lopez is always making music and the albums "sort of happen organically when there's enough material". Lopez stated: "I don’t ever stop. I keep going with it. These records, like 'Follow the Leader,' they just kind of came about. It wasn't something like, 'Oh, I’m going to sit down and make a record right now.'"[4]

Music and lyrics

"Goin' On" was co-written by Joseph Angel, Tramar Dillard, Jamahl "GoonRock" Listenbee, David Quiñones, Coleridge Tillman and Warren Michael.[5] The song was produced by GoonRock, who is known for his work with LMFAO on their international hit songs "Party Rock Anthem" and "Sexy and I Know It". The song contains a dance-ready beat that is "sure to make the club move". The song speaks of the freedom found in dance.[3] "Goin' In" features an "energetic and entrancing beat" and is built into Flo Rida's "hyper-speed rhyme from Lopez's propulsive verse".[6] After proclaiming "They're not stopping us tonight", Lopez switches between a "shimmering crescendo" to the song's "stadium-size" chorus. Ricko Florino of Artistdirect: "It's a vibrant and vivid banger of epic proportions, picking up where Lopez left on Love? and catapulting everything into a whole new stratosphere altogether."[6] "Goin' In" contains heavy synths and many shifts in tempos and movements. Lopez's vocals contain auto-tune, "but not the point of annoyance".[7]

Critical reception

Rick Florino of Artist Direct called "Goin' In" a "summer anthem" that "won't leave your head even long after bikini season has wound down." He continued by stating: "Once again, Jennifer Lopez delivers the ultimate global dance song."[8] Amy Sciarretto of Pop Crush named "Goin' In" to be one of Lopez's most dynamic songs. She also commented that Flo Rida's "lyrical science" gives the song an "urban touch".[7]

Live performances

Lopez debuted "Goin' In" live at the season final of American Idol on May 23, 2012, as part of a medley with "Follow the Leader". Lopez wore an all-white outfit with a baseball cap, backed by dancers who wore the same color scheme along with white wigs.[9]
