Arta (Template:Lang-ar) is a town located in southeastern Djibouti. Arta is the capital town of Arta Region, home to a population of 10,100 inhabitants. Sitting at an elevation of 750 metres (2,438 ft) it is located on the Mountains of Arta.
History
During the Middle Ages, Arta was ruled by the Ifat Sultanate and the Adal Sultanate. It later formed a part of the French Somaliland protectorate in the first half of the 20th century. Under the French colonial rule in 1946, a new housing estate was built. Because of the usually dry and relatively cool weather Arta was the summer residence of the French and Djiboutian people. In 1963 representatives of the two ethnic groups in Djibouti - the Afar and the Issa - the "Declaration of Arta," in which she professed to hold together under the protection of France. So she spoke out against the influence of the neighboring Ethiopia and Somalia. In 2000, peace talks between various factions of the Somali Civil War were held in the city, resulting in the establishment of the Transitional National Government of Somalia.

Geography
The town lies at an elevation of 750 metres above sea level. It lies on middle trending highlands known as the Mountains of Arta. The temperate central portion, where Arta lies, is situated on a rocky plateau.
Climate
Elevation is the major factor in temperature levels, with the higher areas, on average, as 11°C (20°F) cooler, day or night. The overnight lows are not like the "Garden of Eden" because, at night, heavy clothes or blankets are needed, in the highlands, when the temperature drops to about 50–54 °F (10–12.2 °C) every night. Arta features a somewhat rare version of a highland climate with warm, but not hot, summers and cool winters. Due to its 743 m altitude, temperatures are relatively mild for a town located not particularly far from deserts. The city is known for its pleasant climate during the summer periods. Indeed between mid May and early September, many families in the capital go there to spend the summer there. The annual high temperature is an average of 23,4 ° C and low 9 ° C.
