Introduction
Marketo Inc. is a SaaS revenue performance management company specializing in marketing automation and sales effectiveness software solutions for mid-size and enterprise business-to-business (B2B) companies. In May 2012, Marketo introduced new Marketo Social Marketing products following their April acquisition of social campaign management company Crowd Factory.[1] Marketo also offers Spark by Marketo™, a new brand of marketing automation tailored specifically for small businesses.[2] Marketo has been described as a “disruptive” cloud computing company in the demand generation and lead generation space.[3]
Background & History
Headquartered in San Mateo, CA, with offices in Portland and Dublin, Ireland, Marketo was founded in 2006 by Phil Fernandez, Jon Miller and David Morandi, all formerly of Epiphany.[4] Their aim was to take their experience in building products for marketing professionals, and create a product that had a real impact on revenue performance to speed business growth. In 2008, Marketo introduced its first product, Marketo Lead Management, followed by Marketo Sales Insight in 2009 and Marketo Revenue Cycle Analytics in 2010. In November of 2011, Marketo announced $50 million in additional funding led by Battery Ventures,[5] raising a total of $107 million in venture capital to date.[6] At the end of 2011, Marketo announced that it nearly doubled its customer count, signing 120 new contracts in December, and ending the year with 1,578 customers.[7] In closing out 2011, Marketo also reported revenue growth of over 130 percent year-over-year and nearly doubled its employee count.[8]
