Jack Reacher (previously titled One Shot) is an upcoming film adaptation of the 2005 novel 'One Shot' by Lee Child. The film entered production in October 2011, and concluded in January 2012.

Plot

A city is thrown into chaos following a shooting that leaves five dead. What at first seems like a simple case to solve becomes complicated when the accused requests that Jack Reacher be put on the case.

Cast

Cruise was confirmed to play the role of Jack Reacher in July 2011 amidst criticism from fans claiming that he has neither the tough image nor the physique to carry out the role.[1][2] In an interview with the BBC, Lee Child said that it would be impossible to find a suitable actor to play the giant Reacher and that it is impossible to recreate the feel of the book on the big screen, but Cruise had the talent to make an effective Reacher.[3] The primary difference in this movie from the novels will be a Jack Reacher who, instead of being 6'5" tall, will be 5'6" tall.

Production

Production on the film began in 2005.[4] The film rights were sold to Paramount Pictures.[5] In February 2012, Kevin Messick, one of the film's producers, sued Don Granger and Gary Levinsohn, two other producers, for breach of contract over a Joint Venture Agreement, claiming he had "helped to develop the film, renew Paramount's options for the rights to the book, and participated in the search for a screenwriter" but starting in July 2010, had been left out of meetings with the screenwriter and the studio and not given certain drafts of the screenplay while it was under development.[4] Messick is suing for "unspecified damages, his producer's fees and the right to participate in any upcoming sequels."[4]

The film is to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who previously worked with Cruise on the 2008 film Valkyrie, among others.[6] Josh Olson worked on the early screenplay and adapted it from the original best seller by Lee Child, while McQuarrie worked on the finished script.

One Shot was originally to be released in February 2013.[7] In March 2012, the release date was brought forward by Paramount Pictures to December 21, 2012, hoping to capitalize on the box-office success of Cruise's Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which was released at a similar point in 2011.[7] One Shot displaced World War Z, pushing that film's release date back six months.[7]
