Up All Night is the debut studio album by British-Irish boy band One Direction. It was released November 2011 in Ireland and the United Kingdom through Syco Records and was later released in North America on 13 March 2012 through Columbia Records. The thirteen-song set (fifteen on the deluxe edition) features One Direction collaborating with Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub, RedOne, Jamie Scott, Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, Toby Gad and Carl Falk. One Direction began recording the album in early 2011, after the final of the seventh series of The X Factor. The album marks One Direction's first full-length release since being formed in The X Factor and being signed to Syco Records.
Up All Night is predominantly a pop music album, which orientates into pop rock, dance-pop, teen pop and power pop. The album's lyrical content mainly explores themes about having fun, being young, relationships, heartbreak and empowerment. Band member Zayn Malik referred to the album as being "anthemic". "What Makes You Beautiful" won the BRIT Award for Best British Single at the 2012 Brit Awards. The album received generally favorable reviews from contemporary critics, commending the albums's carefree, youthful lyrics and pop sensibility.
Up All Night debuted at number two in the UK, selling 138,163 copies, the highest sales for a number two album in 2011, and became the fastest-selling debut album on the UK Albums Chart of 2011. Released in November, Up All Night became the third biggest-selling debut album and the sixteenth biggest-selling album in the UK Albums Chart of 2011, with 468,000 copies sold. In the United States, Up All Night went straight to number one on the Billboard 200, selling 176,000 copies in its first week,[1] which made One Direction the first UK group in history to achieve this feat with their debut album. Up All Night also topped the charts in fifteen other countries.
Four singles have been released from the album. Lead single "What Makes You Beautiful" was released 11 September 2011. It became the most pre-ordered single in Sony Music Entertainment history. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number one on 18 September 2011, shifting 153,965 copies that week—the highest first-week UK sales for any song in 2011 at the time.[2] It was released in U.S. in February 2012, where it quickly became a top ten hit, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Second single "Gotta Be You" was released, solely in the UK and Ireland, on 11 November 2011. It peaked at number three on both the Irish and UK Singles Charts. On 6 January 2012, "One Thing" was released digitally as the second single outside of the UK and Ireland. The following week, it was released in the UK as the third single. "One Thing" became the third top ten charting single of the album, peaking at number nine in the UK. "One Thing" was sent by Columbia Records to mainstream radio airplay in the U.S. on 22 May 2012.
Background and recording
In 2010, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan applied as solo candidates for the seventh series of The X Factor, but failed to qualify for the "Boys" category. After suggestion by guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, they were put together to form a five-piece boy band, thus qualifying for the "Groups" category.[3] One Direction ended up finishing in third place behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle. In January 2011, One Direction signed a £2 million record contract with Cowell's company Syco Records. Styles stated his excitement: "We wanted to win and coming third was a big disappointment. So to find out we were signed was incredible. Simon Cowell was telling you your life was about to change! It was weird. Coming from our first audition to being signed by Syco is a huge journey".[4] One Direction and nine other contestants from the series participated in the X Factor Live Tour from February 2011 to April 2011.[5] After wrapping up the X Factor Live Tour, the group began recording the album.[4] Recording sessions for the album took place in London, Los Angeles and Stockholm. One Direction collaborated with an array producers and songwriters for the album including, Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub, RedOne, Ed Sheeran, Kelly Clarkson, Tom Fletcher, Steve Mac, Toby Gad and Carl Falk.[6] One Direction made an appearance on The Alan Titchmarsh Show on 4 April 2011 and Malik confirmed that their lead single for the album, "What Makes You Beautiful" would be released in June, though it was pushed back to August in order to coincide with the launch of the eighth series of The X Factor, and then again to September. In November 2011, they signed a record deal with Columbia Records in North America.[7] Steve Barnett, the co-chairman of Columbia Records, said it was not a difficult decision to sign One Direction. "Other artists in that category had gotten a little older," he said. "I just thought there was a void, and maybe they could seize and hold it."[8]
Composition
Up All Night is predominately a pop music album, which orientates into dance-pop, teen pop, pop rock and power pop. Instrumentation throughout the record is provided by guitar, drums and piano. The record is prominently up-tempo, whilst also including ballads "Gotta Be You", "More Than This", "Taken", "Same Mistakes" and "Moments".[9][10][11][12]
The album opens with lead single "What Makes You Beautiful", an up-tempo electropop and teen pop song. The song has a guitar-based chorus, the song has been noted for similarities between Grease single "Summer Nights". Harry Styles spoke to MTV News on the song, "I think for us we wanted something that wasn't cheesy but it was fun. It kind of represented us." Liam Payne added, "We always wanted the single to be something that people didn't expect and then when we heard it, it wasn't what we expected either so it kind of fitted perfectly."[16] The second song on the album, as well as the second single, is "Gotta Be You". The song is a mid-tempo pop rock ballad.
The third cut and the album's third single, "One Thing" is an up-tempo pop rock song. The song has a "plucky guitar riff with a forceful chorus". Lewis Corner from Digital Spy called the song "arena-ready".[18] Syco Records described the song as "an epic pop smash-in-waiting, featuring soaring vocal harmonies, powerhouse guitar riffs and an anthemic chorus that refuses to leave your head."[19] Members Niall Horan and Liam Payne referred to the track as their favorite song on the album. The fourth song on the album, is "More Than This". The song is a slow-tempo pop ballad. The song contains sounds of synthesizers. Jason Lipshutz from Billboard called the song "One Direction's own All I Have to Give".[20] Harry Styles called the track his favorite song on the album.
The fifth song on the album, is the title track "Up All Night", an uptempo electropop and dance-pop song. The song is a party-anthem, with the Katy Perry name-check in the chorus being noted by various media outlets.[20][21][22] The sixth cut is the pop song "I Wish", a mid-tempo song, which lyrical tone has been compared to Robyn's "Dancing On My Own".[20] The seventh song "Tell Me A Lie", an uptempo pop rock song influenced with guitar and pulsating beats. The song was originally intended for Kelly Clarkson's album Stronger (2011). Clarkson's version was leaked onto the internet a few months before. Clarkson spoke to Capital FM on how she was proud of the end result. "It's a really cute song, I love it. I loved that they liked it. They sound really great on it. I already have it – I'm so VIP with my copy on my computer! It does sound really good."[23]
The eighth track "Taken", is a guitar-driven pop ballad. Lyrically the song is about heartbreak and relationships. The ninth cut is "I Want", an uptempo pop rock song, influenced by a "jaunty" piano line. The track was written by Tom Fletcher member of pop rock band McFly. In an interview with Billboard Fletcher spoke on his time working with One Direction. He stated, "when I was in the studio with them, I was like, 'Guys, you don't understand, you're going to be massive,'" Fletcher says. "They're all awesomely talented guys, stupidly good-looking of course, as well. Young. They've got everything. They've got the whole package. But none of them realized it. They're all very humble and down to earth. It just reminded me of exactly of how we were like when we started."[24]
The tenth song on the album is "Everything About You", an uptempo teen pop and electro pop song. The eleventh song on the album is "Same Mistakes", a slow-tempo pop song influenced by an array of piano, synthesizers and percussion's. The twelfth track is "Save You Tonight", an uptempo electropop song, the track has a "distinct" retro sound and arrangement. The first cut on deluxe edition and fourteenth song on the album, is "Stand Up". The song is uptempo electropop and pop rock song.
The second song on the deluxe edition and fifteenth song on the album, is "Moments". The track is mid-tempo indie/pop ballad. Tomlinson referred to song as his favorite song on the album,[27] calling the song "phenomenal".[28] Horan also commented on the collaboration, "getting to write and record with Sheeran on our album was an honour."[29]
Promotion and release
On 15 October 2011, One Direction revealed the title of the album after fans completed a challenge on their official website to unlock the cover and title.[30] On 17 November 2011, One Direction previewed a few tracks from the album during a UStream session.[31] On 17 October 2011, the track listing was revealed[30][32] for the album. The official album cover, which shows One Direction on a beach, was released on 21 October 2011. Lou Teasdale served as hair stylist and make-up artist. John Urbano who directed the music video for "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Gotta Be You" shot the photography.[33][34][35] Illustrations were done by Chris Gray. Caroline Watson served as stylist.[9] Up All Night was made available on CD and digital download, in two editions, standard edition and deluxe limited-edition, the Limited Yearbook Edition, in hard form shape of a yearbook, it features a book-sized collection of photos, quotes, and lyrics from the five members of One Direction. The deluxe edition also features two songs written by Ed Sheeran and Richard Stannard.[36]
The album was released in Ireland and the United Kingdom, 18 November and 21 November 2011, through Syco Records. The album was released on 25 November and 28 November 2011 in Australia and New Zealand, respectively. The album was fully released in Europe in early 2012. The album was originally set for release in North America, on 23 March 2012 through Columbia Records, but was rescheduled for a one week earlier release on 13 March 2012, with Columbia Records releasing a statement:[37] "due to overwhelming fan demand, their debut album will be released one week early on 13 March 2012."[38][39]
For the North American release on 13 March 2012, Columbia Records executives used social media to shape its marketing campaign. Columbia Records co-chairman, Steve Barnett and his team decided to reverse the usual pattern of releasing a single on radio. Instead the label mounted a four-month marketing campaign aimed at building a fan base through social media before a single was ever released or played on the radio here. The social media campaign asked fans to sign petitions and to enter video competitions to win a concert in their town. The campaign worked as the band's facebook followers in the United States rose to 400,000 from 40,000. "What Makes You Beautiful" sold more than 131,000 copies in its first week, even though it had yet to be played on the radio. Radio programmers were flooded with calls from fans. "Now they are calling the radio station, and the radio station is scratching its head, saying, ‘We don't even have that record yet,’" said Johnny Wright, who managed New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. "It's almost like the return of The Beatles. I call it hype, but it's positive hype because it's all real. It's not manufactured. No one paid these kids."[40]

Up All Night received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 64, which indicates "generally favorable reviews".[93] Allmusic's Matthew Chisling gave the album three and a half stars out of five, commending the album for its appeal to teen audience, "limitless potential for the time being, this is a perfectly sized, and targeted, collection." PopMatters' Zachary Houle, gave the album (7/10) rating, calling the album a "laudable addition to the boy band pantheon" and a "well-crafted slice of pop you can pop bubbles to". Digital Spy's Robert Copsey gave the album four out of five stars. Commending the album "for a collection of pg pop rock with killer choruses" and summarizing it as "an adorable as expected debut with a surprising amount of bite". The Independent gave the album two out of five stars, commenting on the album, "the album consists of fifteen instalments of inoffensive daytime radio pop, of which half the songs sound like "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys, the other half like "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty", ultimately stating, "it will sell by the zillion." Jason Lipshutz from Billboard Magazine elaborated on the sound of the album, stating:
Up All Night demonstrates an originality in sound that was necessary for the revitalization of the boy band movement. The electropop currently dominating Top 40 radio is seamlessly weaved into the pop harmonies made standards by 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees -- for instance, the title track sounds like a hybrid of Backstreet Boys' "Larger Than Life" and an LMFAO song, and even includes a Katy Perry name-check. Up All Night has its ups and downs, but One Direction complete two important tasks on their debut album: the boy band notches a long-lasting hit with "What Makes You Beautiful," and they look forward instead of back. Get ready to hear a lot more of One Direction.[103]
— Jason Lipshutz
The Daily Star's John Earls awarded the album a (8/10) rating. Writing an album "that doesn't take the easy route", commending the album for "big personalities" and "belting fun pop anthems". Whilst Jody Rosen from Rolling Stone criticised the album for lacking personality, pop music critics Trash Lounge awarded it four out of five stars, comparing One Direction favourably to other all-male groups, "Strip away the commercial cynicism and, thanks to some of the world’s best pop producers, this is a record that teaches obvious rivals JLS and The Wanted a lesson or two about throwing serious-faced-boybandism to the wind and just having some bloody fun." Cosmopolitan's Sophie Goddard, in a positive review, praised the album for a collection of "toe-tappers that are just impossible to dislike".[104]
Matthew Horton from Virgin Media gave the album three stars out of five, writing that the album brims with "puncy pop rock", noting that songs "One Thing", "Save You Tonight" and "Tell Me Lie" are similar to Kelly Clarkson's style of music, and went to praise "Gotta Be You" deeming it "uplifting". Further writing that song "Stole My Heart" was "the only misstep, which only reinforces their decision to go pop rock."[105] Adam Markovitz from Entertainment Weekly gave the album a B+, writing that the album "won't help the group earn much respect in music circles. But if a tween-pop empire is what these boys are after, they're definitely headed in the right direction". MSN Music's Ben Chalk gave the album a (4/5) rating. He wrote that the album was "manufactured, calculated and commercial", writing it didn't matter, "the result is a corking pop album". In his review he also complimented the album for its collection of singles, writing "Up All Night is a collection of highly polished pop gems, which knows its market and gives it what it wants".
