Sanji

Sanji is the cook aboard the Merry Go (Going Merry in the Japanese version), as a member of Monkey D. Luffy's Straw Hat Pirate Crew. He has superb fighting skills that only make use of the lower part of the body, in an effort to minimise damage to his hands which would impair his cooking skills. Naturally, Sanji uses an array of powerful and varied kicking moves when he fights. His cooking skills are also the best within the manga One Piece, second to only Chef "Red Leg" Zeff (or "Red Shoes" Zeff" in North America) of Baratie, the floating restaurant and Sanji's mentor.

Also, Sanji is quite the "charmer" in a way. He tends to flirt (Ie. proclaim his everlasting love for, propose to, recite poetry to) with any attractive woman he sees, specifically the female crew members of the Straw Hat Pirates (Robin, Vivi and especially Nami) when aboard the Merry Go (something which the girls seem to encourage as it gets them special treatment), and will do anything to win adoration from them, to no avail. His lovesick attitude is not only an annoyance to most of the crew, but has actualy proved dangerous before. This is in a stark contrast to his usual tough, brash, trash-talking attitude.

History

Sanji was Zeff's protégé and sous-chef, and the two had a long history together. Nine years earlier, Zeff (who was a pirate at the time) attacked the ship that Sanji was working on as a cook; however, both ships were caught in a sudden storm, and both sank. Zeff managed to save the young Sanji from drowning and the two were washed onto a rock outcropping, high above the sea. Despite their good fortune, however, there was little food for them: a few rations had washed onto the rock with them, but there was no vegetation, no animals, and no way to reach the water to fish. Splitting up what little rations remained, Zeff ordered Sanji to sit at the other end of the island, and look for a ship. Sanji protested Zeff keeping a large sack for himself, but Zeff brushed him off, saying that as an adult, his stomach was bigger. Days passed. Sanji had no more food, but there was still no sign of a ship. Many weeks afterward (the exact amount of time differs between the manga and anime), an emaciated Sanji decided to take a chance, and kill the old man for his food. He did not kill Zeff, however: when he slashed open the old man's sack in a fit of rage, he discovered that there was no food inside, only treasure. To his horror, he realized that Zeff had eaten his own leg to survive (in the anime, he lost it while saving Sanji after becoming entangled in one of the wrecked ships, and simply ate nothing). Wracked with guilt, Sanji agreed that if they were rescued, he would help Zeff find a restaurant on the water, so that those at sea would not have to go hungry. Soon after, a ship appeared, and they were spared from death.

On the Baratie, Zeff and Sanji shared an uneasy relationship, frequently getting into arguments and exchanging insults. Sanji would call Zeff a "Shit-Geezer," ("Crap-Geezer" and "Old Geezer" in North America) and in return, Zeff would call Sanji a "stupid eggplant" ("Baby Eggplant" or "String Bean"in North America) and tell him his cooking was awful. Yet for all that, Sanji remained faithful to his promise nine years before, and risked his life to help defend the restaurant he helped build from the clutches of Don Krieg and his pirate armada. With the help of Monkey D. Luffy, he succeeded, but was unwilling to leave his position at Baratie to become Luffy's cook. In the end, Zeff had to remind him of the dream they both shared: to find the legendary sea, All Blue. Tearfully thanking the old man for everything, Sanji departed with Luffy to retrieve Nami, who had stolen the Going Merry and was making her way to the stronghold of the fish man pirate, Arlong.

Sanji also took on the codename of Mr. Prince, the owner of the Shitty Restaurant, in order to save his nakama from Sir Crocodile's trap.

Currently in the manga, Sanji's inability to attack women has proved extremely disadvantagous when he had to face Kalifa of CP9. Kalifa has used her Bubble Bubble Devil Fruit powers to literally clean his life away so that he is in an injured and shiny glass-like state. Nami has since taken the fight against Kalifa into her own hands.

Abilities and powers

Sanji has mastered the martial art of Red Foot that the pirate Zeff apparently taught him. All of his maneuvers come from his legs and feet. His legs and feet are extremely powerful, able to smash boulders and defeat creatures much larger than himself (like banana-crocodiles and Moh-Moo). His legs also imbue him with surperior speed and agility, able to leap and run much farther than normal humans.

As for his actual "attacks" Sanji has a very large number of specific kicks and techniques he uses to fight with. It should be noted that he doesn't call out an attack name whenever he kicks someone or something, but for important events and fights he usualy will. 98% of his attacks are said in French and are usually cooking/food terms related in some way to the specific portion of the opponent's body that he's targeting or to the nature of the attack itself. In the English anime, the attacks are changed to be funny sounding, non-existant food items that have something to do with the target area of the attack.

Attacks

Collier Shoot (Neck Shoot): Sanji jumps high into the air and lands a powerful kick to the opponent's neck. "Collier" is the French term for neck meat. In the English Version this attack's name is "Trachea Turnover Surprise".

Collier (Neck): Another kick to the neck but this time Sanji does it whilest still on the ground. "Collier" is the French term for neck meat. In the English Version this attack's name is "Clavicle Schnitzel Kick Off".

Epaulé (Shoulder): A downward kick targeting the opponent's shoulder, meant to knock them off balance or drive them into the ground. "Epaule" is the French term for shoulder meat. In the English Version this attack's name is "Trachea Turnover".

Cotelette (Rib Chop): Dropping down into a one-handed handstand position, Sanji kicks the opponent hard in the ribs, this attack is usually followed by Selle. "Cotelette" is the French term for rib meat. This attack was edited out of the English version and thus has no "English" name yet.

Sellé (Lower Back): Commonly used as a combo attack with Cotelette, using the momentum from the Cotelette attack Sanji (still in a handstand) spins around in the opposite direction to deliver a fast kick to the opponent's lower back or Lumbar region. "Selle" is the French term for lower back meat. This attack was also edited out of the English version and thus has no "English" name yet.

Poi Trene (Breast): A stabbing kick straight into the opponent's chest. "Poi Trene" is the French term for breast meat. In the English Version this attack's name is "Barbequed Rib Buster".

Gigot (Legs): Running at the opponent Sanji delivers a sweeping kick to the knee caps, the opponent is either send flying or slammed to the ground as a result. "Gigot" is the French term for leg meat. In the English Version this attack's name is "Shish kabob Back Smash".

Mouton Shot: One of Sanji's strongest single kicks, and a common finishing move. He starts by jumping or fliping into the air and then channels all his might into one leg to deliver a kick to the opponent's mid-section, or sometimes their head, that sends them flying. "Mouton" is the cooking term that refers to cooked lamb meat. In the English Version this attack's name is "Leg of Lamb Drumstick Supreme".

Poi Trene Shoot (Breast Shoot): A stronger version of Poi Trene only this time Sanji aims alittle higher and kicks upward not downward. "Poi Trene" is the French term for breast meat.

Reception: Sanji lifts one of his legs up high and hooks his foot around the opponent's neck, then uses that leg to smash the opponent's face into the ground hard. This attack's not named after anything food related, but after the "reception" that one gets when entering a restaurant.

Flanchét Shoot (Stomach Shoot): Sanji kicks the opponent with a head on snap kick. "Flanchet" is French for "stomach."

Anti-Manner Kick Course: Thought to be Sanji's strongest single kick attack, he only uses it when he's really, really mad. He gathers all the power he can muster and delivers a massive vertical kick by lifting one of his legs a full 180 degrees in the air. This attack is aimed at the very center of the opponent's torso (front or back) and is almost always enough to defeat any opponent with one shot.

Joué Shoot (Cheek Shoot): Sanji leans forward and delivers a hard side kick to one of the opponent's cheeks. "Joue" is french for "cheek."

Basses Cottes (Mid-ribs): A mid-air attack, Sanji kicks one leg straight forward to attack the opponent while kicking the other one backwards to provide the nessicary momentum.

Longé (Hip): A sweeping kick, usually performed from the back targeting the opponent's hips, very useful for sending an opponent flying in preparation for another kick.

Tendron (Collar): A straight on side kick targeting the middle area of the opponent's collar bone.

Quasi (Rump): Sanji flips over into a double-handed handstand, spins around and kicks the opponent's ass, literally. This attack is usually followed by Queue.

Queue (Tail): Commonly used as a combo attack with Quasi, Sanji continues spinning with the momentum from Quasi Sanji swings his other leg around to kick the opponent's tail bone.

Jarret (Shank): Often used right before or after Cuisseau, Sanji sends a hard kick to the opponent's shin. This can be used to attack or block an incoming kick as he did against Bon Clay.

Cuisseau (Thigh): Often used right before or after Jarret, Sanji sends a hard kick to the opponent's thigh. This can be used to attack or block an incoming kick as he did against Bon Clay.

Flanchét (Stomach): A simple kick to the opponent's stomach.

Veal Shoot: Another one of Sanji's strongest/finisher attacks, leaps into the air and sweeps his leg forward to land a powerful kick to the center of the opponent's torso.

Concasser (Crush): Another finisher, Sanji leaps high into the air and starts flipping over rapidly to gain speed, then he brings the heel of his foot down on the opponent's head killing them instantly, or at least knocking them out for a really long time. "Concasser" is French for the process of tenderizing meat by pounding it.

Troiseme Haché (Triple Dice): Sanji does a series of backflips towards his opponent before using his hands for one final push to launch him towards and opponent's face where he delivers several fast kicks.

Bouquetier Shoot (Mixed Vegetables Shoot): Often used as the final blow in a series of attacks, Sanji lands on his hands underneath an opponent's chin, then uses both hands to spring upwards to deliver a blow to the opponent's chin with both feet.

Slice Shoot: A disarming attack where Sanji runs forward, jumps into the air and kicks the opponent's hand to do damage and knock a weapon from their hand.

Party Table Kick Course: An attack for fighting against large groups, Sanji jumps into the air and lands on the head of one of the opponents in a hand stand. He then spins around rapidly to deliver a savage kick to the face of anyone within range. After he runs out of targets the dismounts and kicks the person he was spinning on.

Brochette: Sanji jumps over the top of his opponent and aims one leg directly downwards towards the opponent. He then drops downwards while spinning like a drill to spear his opponent with his extended leg. A "Brochette" is a French shish kabob type skewer that has many uses.

Collier Flip (Neck Flip): An attack for defeating two opponents simultaneously. Sanji drops into a handstand and kicks each of the two opponents in the neck at the same time. He then uses his hands to launch himself upwards and spin around at the same time, this sends his opponents flying into the air while spinning wildly. He once used it while on the Sea Train "Puffing Tom" to embed two elite Government Officers into the Puffing Tom's roof. "Collier" is the French term for neck meat.

Frité Assortié (Fried Assortment): An attack for use against several opponents, Sanji drops into a handstand then delivers a series of upward kicks to knock any nearby opponent's skyward.

Escalopé: A jumping kick to the forehead. "Escalope" is a French cooking term for a thin boneless piece of meat, in this case Sanji's refering to the extremely thin flesh covering the skull.

Epauchagé: An attack used against Wanze of CP7 (see CP9 for more on him), Sanji uses a pair of kitchen knives to peel away an opponent's armor. This is the only time Sanji has made an exception to his rule of never using knives or his hands in a fight but this was a very special case since Wanze's armor was made of food (ramen to be exact) and they were fighting in a kitchen. "Epauchage" is a French cooking verb which means "to peel away skin."

Oiel (Eyes): A straight on kick to the opponent's eyes.

Nez (Nose): A straight on kick to the opponent's nose.

Joué (Cheek): A straight on kick to the opponent's cheek.

Bouché (Mouth): A straight on kick to the opponent's upper jaw, this attack targets the roof of their mouth, and thus can only be done when the opponent's mouth is open.

Dents (Teeth): A straight on kick to the opponent's teeth, Sanji hits both the upper and lower sets of teeth at the same time, and thus he can only use his attack when the opponent's mouth is closed.

Menton (Chin): A straight on kick to the opponent's lower jaw/chin.

Parage Shoot: Sanji delives a barrage of kicks to every single section of the opponent's face, these kicks are so powerful that they can alter the bone structure of the unlucky recepiant. "Parage" is a French cooking verb which means "to trim," it can also refer to a special method of peeling a had of lettuce or cabbage carefully to preserve the tender leaves at its core.

San Point Decoupagé (Three Point Decoupage): Sanji throws a powerful roundhouse kick to the opponent's mid-section, striking them with the entire length of his leg. "Decoupage" is a French cooking verb which means "to cut up."

Concassé: Sanji does a one handed handstand then spins around rapidly to gain speed. When he reaches a fast enough speed he extends one of his legs in order to send a hard kick to the opponent's side with his heel. 'Concassé' is the French term for the process of peeling, seeding and chopping tomatos.

Shishinabe Shoot (Boar Hot Pot Shoot): Sanji attacks with a powerful flying sidekick, he also uses this attack to break down walls.

Differences between versions

In the manga and the original Japanese anime, Sanji smokes cigarettes. In the English anime, Sanji sucks on lollipops. In the English-language manga, Sanji often uses "crap" as an adjective while speaking. This is an attempt to convey both his extremely coarse speaking style in Japanese, as well as his use of "kuso" ("shit") as an expletive. For example, he often calls Zeff "Shit-Geezer" (Kuso-Jiji). In the English anime, he simply calls Zeff "old-geezer". Also, in the English anime, Sanji appears to have a nasally Brooklyn accented voice (done by David Moo). It was once believed that 4Kids was going to give him a French accent and that Eric Stuart was going to be his voice actor.

Trivia

Sanji often fights with Zoro, and the two have developed quite a rivalry. They often compete when fighting enemies.
In contrast to Zoro, who, due to his swords, fights mostly with his hands, Sanji only fights with his feet, except for two rare instances, where he used a gun and a butcher's knife.
At one occasion, Sanji points a gun at Miss All-Sunday (Nico Robin) during the escape from Whiskey Peak (One of the first of seven islands upon entering the Grand Line). Another occasion, when Sanji fought a CP7 chef, Sanji used kitchen knives as weapons. He said this was because he was in a kitchen, and his opponent was fighting with food, but he didn't beat Wanze using the knifes, since he says a cook should never use his sacred knives nor hands as weapons.
Sanji originally wanted to cook Chopper, and continues to refer to him as their "emergency food supply" to tease him.
Sanji's left eye is never seen, always covered by his hair. This is speculated because Oda didn't want to have to mirror Sanji's trademark curly eyebrow on the other side, but fans have suggested that his eye is sewn shut, there is no eye, and that it is permanently heart-shaped just in case. At one occasion in the manga, when Sanji was turned upside down, his eye was covered by a speech balloon. Although they are all just speculations, it's not known what or why his left eye is covered.(There are rare times when Sanji's left eye was shown: see episodes 21, 27, and 82.)
Sanji is seen wearing sunglasses in Alabasta when he took on the pseudonym "Mr. Prince" in order to save his nakama (comrades/friends/allies) when they were imprisoned at Rain Dinner.
Sanji is 19 years old and 5'10 1/2" tall.
He is born March 2nd, a Pisces. His birthday comes from "San", which can mean the third or three, and "Ji" which means the second. The second day of the third month.
Unlike the other four Straw Hats that are from East Blue, Sanji was actually born in North Blue and moved to East Blue later.
Sanji's 'all kicks' fighting style is an fictional alteration of the Brazillian martial art Capoeira.
Sanji is referred to as an "ero-cook" in the anime, which means "perverted cook" because of his constant flirting
Sanji uses the word Mellorine to express his happiness over Nami, Vivi, and Nico Robin.
