John Henry Payne (born 19 March 1858 in Broughton — died 4 January 1942 (aged 83) in Victoria Park, Manchester) was an English rugby union footballer of the 1880s, playing at representative level for England, and at club level for Broughton Rangers, as a Half-back, e.g. Fly-half, or Scrum-half. Prior to 2 June 1896, Broughton Rangers was a rugby union club.
International honours
John Payne won caps for England while at Broughton Rangers in the 1881–82 Home Nations rugby union matches against Scotland, in the 1883 Home Nations Championship against Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, in the 1884 Home Nations Championship against Ireland, and in the 1885 Home Nations Championship against Wales, and Ireland.[1]
Change of Code
When Broughton Rangers converted from the rugby union code to the rugby league code on 2 June 1896, John Payne would have been in his late thirties. Consequently, he may have been too old to have been both a rugby union and rugby league footballer for Broughton Rangers.
