I've just noticed your work on Templates for Deletion. In my honest opinion, many of your nomination just create more work and more operations on the server. They also waste my time telling you this. Just a thought. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:10, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps you might wish to take more notice of what goes on at Wikipedia and follow some of the recent cases where Arbcom chooses to condone some of the most blatant personal attacks and vile language. Let's not get over-sensitive about a genuinely mild and relevant observation of an editor's work. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:45, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

What happened to using this page as a prelude to FFD? That helps more. --George Ho (talk) 23:48, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

It might be helpful for those who barely understand WP:NFCC, do not have to read the whole article, and barely have time to read all policies and guidelines. I have seen massive nominations, and it might be depicted as spamming sometimes or disruptive. Twinkle may or may not be good substitutes for multiple nominations. --George Ho (talk) 00:59, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
... Let's stay on topic. You said that you've tried NFR, correct? Every review passes without commentary, right? Well, the screenshots you've nominated should have been either reviewed or moved from infobox to a body: see example here. --George Ho (talk) 01:10, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Oh wait. I must mention: the purpose of the "Non-free content review" is reviewing whether each image passes all criteria of WP:NFCC. Why and how are you sure that each screenshot did not pass at least one crucial criterion? I checked some images and found that some screenshots are too valuable to be deleted, such as File:TheOffice(US)1-04.jpg. That image is suitable for body rather than image, but you nominated it for deletion, anyway. Also, FFD discussions may have no replies because... most of deletion procedures are incomplete: in other words, sometimes, we fail to notify readers about a deletion nomination for one image. Twinkle does not add Template:ffdc to captions of images, which is a very crucial procedure, and does not inform uploaders, unless I'm wrong --George Ho (talk) 01:21, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Can you at least withdraw the nomination on File:TheOffice(US)1-04.jpg since rationale has been fixed? --George Ho (talk) 01:58, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Since you have withdrawn a nomination on one of non-free screenshot, perhaps the best thing to do would be checking all non-free content criteria for every non-free image before you nominate it as FFD again. If you are not sure, try WP:non-free content review, which is nominated for discussion and proposed to be "historical and inactive". --George Ho (talk) 04:42, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Restoring blocked user's edits

I see that you have reverted my edit to Hassan II of Morocco, despite the edit note which stated that I did not revert because it is in error, but because the editor who posted it is LouisPhilippeCharles, who has been globallly blocked from editing Wikipedia in all languages due to notoriously improper edits to royalty articles for years. Edits made by a blocked user are, ipso facto, considered vandalism to be reverted on sight. Otherwise the blocked editor has no incentive to improve behavior on Wikipedia. Your revert is exactly what he hopes will free him to edit again, by discouraging editors like me from reverting his changes. To accomplish this, LouisPhilippeCharles often deliberately makes edits that may be improvements to royalty articles, in hopes that if his vandalism is reverted, another editor will restore his edits, thus encouraging him, in effect, to edit at will in spite of being blocked. Please read prior discussion about the ongoing problem witht this vandal. I ask that you revert your reverts and wait a few days before making the change which the vandal is hoping you will protect. Thanks. FactStraight (talk) 20:50, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Opinion on categories

Hi; I would like your opinion on Category:Albumchart and Category:Singlechart. I've never seen anything like them before. I'm not clear on what exactly they are for, since "what links here" gives you the articles that use a template. Is this part of some scheme that is used in media or something? (The creator of Category:Albumchart hasn't been clear in explaining its use to me, apart from warning me that just because "I don't like it" doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.) Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:43, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Pardon the intrusion, but it looks like to me that the two cats are merely tracking cats to show where the chart is transcluded. Which, in this case, is merely duplicative of whatlinkshere.
Also, when they went "live", they should probably have removed template:polluted category from the cat page. - jc37 05:08, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:AConversationwithRobertPlant.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:AConversationwithRobertPlant.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:41, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

This edit is wrong at so many levels... Deryck C. 19:56, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry my message above wasn't quite helpful. Here's the long version:
  1. The template says "Traditional Chinese (HK)". The category that was added, however, says "Simplified Chinese".
  2. The use of "Characters" in the category name also misses the point of this template. {{xx icon}} templates are inherently about the language of the tagged links.
  3. Tagging the category on the template is redundant and causes confusion. Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Zh-hk_icon is there to list transclusions already. The possible confusion is that not every zh-hk external link is tagged, but that's a general issue for the language icon templates' categories.
  4. (not your fault) Since August 2011, {{Language icon}} also automatically categorises all articles with such icons into language-specific subcategories, so a category tag on this template is now completely redundant. See Category:Articles with traditional Chinese (HK) language external links. Deryck C. 09:30, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
You're welcome. Deryck C. 09:38, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Request

Hi. Can you use AWB to fix the category links like this for the species of Copelatus up to Copelatus mimetes?. Just need replace nl: and vi: with subst:PAGENAME and remove es link. Currently they link to the genus article not the species and spanish wiki doesn;t have the articles on the species.

Actually there is also a source now needing formatting and full title. Can you make the two changes in one like this? Regards

Dr. Blofeld 11:34, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Almost, but you added two superfluous same sources! Can you fix like this? Then done, thanks!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:08, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

File:The Longest Daycare.png

I notice that you have reverted my edits on File:The Longest Daycare.png twice now, in regards to its categorization. I realize that given the nature of the image, it might qualify to be included in both Category:The Simpsons promotional artwork AND Category:The Simpsons screenshots. But since both categories are subs of Category:The Simpsons images, it makes the image show up twice in lists, when trying to do maintenance on images, as part of The Simpsons WikiProject. It is not necessary to have redundant categories on the same image, so if you would pick which category you think is more accurate, and remove the other one, it would be appreciated. Cats issue

I have noticed that you added several "modern" cats to historical figures such as John of Dailam and Isaac of Nineveh. Please note that Iraq is a modern entity carved by the league of nation from three Ottoman Vilayets in the 1920s, saying that John of Dailam was an Iraqi Christian as like calling Muhammad a Saudi Muslim. Regards.--Rafy talk 14:04, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

I think the best solution is to create cats for other states that controlled that city. For example the Category:People from Gdańsk is a sub cat of Category:People from Royal Prussia, which makes perfect sense since most articles that populate this cat belongs to ethnic German people lived long before modern Poland was created.--Rafy talk 21:25, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

You are a Vanguard Editor

Hi, you might not have realized it, but you are now a "Vanguard editor", which is the highest obtainable service rank on wikipedia. I realized it was not on your userbox, so I have put it. Many many congrats! Honest speaking, that fact that you were able to reach this rank, is just a major achievement. The thing is, 99.9% percent of the times, something or the other happens with most users. Many of them retire and many get blocked due to one or the other reason. But you were able to become a Vanguard editor, that is unbelievable. Surge_Elec (talk) 17:20, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

FFD nominations, may 15-17

While looking through one of the stale deletion nomination database reports, I noticed that a couple dozen files from TV Shows that you nominated for deletion never got listed at WP:FFD. Spot checking Wikipedia:Database reports/Old deletion discussions it looked like almost all the ones in the file category are yours. Could you take a look at them? Monty845 20:32, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

WP:TWINKLE That's a small script error. Were you going to nominate them properly, or did you want me to do it? —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:48, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
I'll leave the nominations to you. It may be your nominating too fast for twinkle to handle it, if twinkle encounters an edit conflict with another edit its making, as in the case of a batch of nominations submitted at once, it will just stop, leaving the tag on the image. That's at least 13,000 categories for something that really doesn't matter whether the template is used or not. All it does is add a standard main category hat note, which many of these categories already have. I just don't see the point in changing something that is not doing anything significantly different by adding the template, and I would think your time could be put to much better use here since you do do so much productive and positive work. And that's the point of this post. I'm not looking to stop what you're doing; just questioning why this really needs to be done when it seems there's so much else that could use your help. For example, many of these categories need to be defaultsorted and added to other appropriate parent genre and nationality categories, which would be much more useful to users of Wikipedia than adding a template to an existing category that is already properly categorized and most users wouldn't even notice the difference. Thanks. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 22:18, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Either/or Thanks for your exhortation--I don't take your criticism as improper and I respect your opinion, especially considering all of the good albums work you've done. As you may know, I'm responsible for about half of the entire albums category tree and a lot of the structure of it at WP:MOSALBUM, so as I'm adding the template, I'm also doing other tasks like DEFAULTSORTING and requesting renames at CfD. For that matter, as you can see from my contributions, for the past two summers, I've made about 400,000 edits just categorizing albums and creating over 2,500 categories in the process. My attempts to bring structure and consistency to this scheme aren't done and never will be. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:18, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. I've obviously taken notice of your edits and your value to the project. It was because of that that I brought it up because there's so much other work that can be done to better aid and benefit readers IMO. This task being performed wasn't intended as a strict criticism, but thanks for informing that you are performing other additional tasks. I had only looked at a couple of examples. Cheers. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 21:27, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

How come you removed Robin's British Scientologists category? Johnalexwood (talk) 09:34, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Not sure I have to admit that I can't recall (it was three years ago), but it may have been because there is no source identifying him as such in the article. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:24, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

File:The Longest Daycare again

Again, regarding File:The Longest Daycare.png, I realize that the image is a screenshot, which is also being used to promote the animated short film. But that is not enough of a reason to include it in Category:The Simpsons screenshots AND Category:The Simpsons promotional artwork, which are both sub-categories of Category:The Simpsons images. I think that we are both working in good faith here, but I tried to compromise by including the image in Category:Title card screenshots instead, and continuing to just revert my edits without discussion goes against WP:BRD. Fortdj33 (talk) 19:38, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Categorization I don't see why a file shouldn't be in relevant categories. Categories are used to navigate and someone may wish to navigate from one to another amongst relevant pieces of media. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:40, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
With all due respect, I'm not disputing the advantages of proper categorization. But there is nothing unique about this image, that would require it to be included in multiple Simpsons image categories. Surely you can find a more appropriate category, to show that it is being used in more than one type of media. Fortdj33 (talk) 19:47, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Which one? But it's both a titlecard and a screenshot, right? —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:17, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, but all the other images in Category:The Simpsons promotional artwork, are things that were specifically drawn to promote The Simpsons. The title card for The Longest Daycare might seem to fall into that category, but it is essentially just another screenshot, which just happens to also be promoting an animated film. I understand that were arguing about semantics here, but it is not necessary to include the image in more than one sub-category of Category:The Simpsons images. Feel free to add another Wikipedia category, if you find one that is more appropriate, but the only Simpsons category it should be included in, is Category:The Simpsons screenshots. Alison Brie

Thank you for the citation. With an unpronounceable name like Schermerhorn, her father must have some German ancestry, too, but Scottish/Irish is good enough for now. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 17:42, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Scotch-Irish I'm not sure if she's actually "Scotch-Irish" either (and I don't think she knows), but I thought that was a good fit. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:45, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

RE: Confusing edit

Regarding this edit: this, since when is it necessary to categorize as a single and a song for the same year when Category:2011 singles is a subcategory of Category:2011 songs. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 16:54, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Right That's what I figured. I have done the same thing before and been reprimanded per WP:SONG. Apparently, they want it to be in both "X songs" and "X singles". —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:28, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm. It's not explicit in WP:SONGS. It says to place in "a subcategory of Category:Songs by year" and Category:2011 singles is a subcategory of Category:Songs by year. With few exceptions, it seems proper subcategorization to me. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 17:38, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
I know It makes sense to me and maybe they've changed their minds, but that's at least how it used to be. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:41, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I see you created the Casa Ricordi albums category, but the title is wrong: it should be Dischi Ricordi albums, as Casa Ricordi was just a music publishing company that focused on classical music, while Dischi Ricordi is the discographic music label that actually published the albums you put in the category. Of course Dischi Ricordi was a subsidiary company of Casa Ricordi, but they had completely different field of business and should not be confused (that's why I proposed for speedy deletion the page Dischi Ricordi, which wrongly redirects to Casa Ricordi). Please fix that when you've got some spare time. Thank you! --Una giornata uggiosa '94 · So, what do you want to talk about? 14:51, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks So all of them should be renamed or only some of them? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:20, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
You're welcome! I meant that the category should be renamed Dischi Ricordi albums, and all pages currently in Category:Casa Ricordi albums should be categorised into Category:Dischi Ricordi albums. Category:Casa Ricordi albums shouldn't exist, because Casa Ricordi was a music publishing company and, as such, it didn't issue albums but only music sheets and librettos of classical music (definitely not albums), so it should be deleted after all pages will be moved to the right category. --Una giornata uggiosa '94 · So, what do you want to talk about? 19:35, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Re: Please stop

Because the alt text was awful, and it's not mandatory anyway. Theleftorium (talk) 19:00, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Okay Then make it better, don't make the page less accessible. Also, I fail to see how it's awful. Please enlighten me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:05, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
I just don't think a blind person would understand what "backs into a corner of crayons" is supposed to mean. What is a corner of crayons? Why is she backing into the corner? (because she is frightened by something) And then it says "with the title to her right", but the title is actually below her. Theleftorium (talk) 19:16, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
Okay I'll happily write better copy, then. And the placement changed because you added a new image and then didn't change the text. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:17, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
I haven't added any images... Theleftorium (talk) 19:19, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
So sorry I was wrong. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:24, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
No worries. New alt is definitely better! Theleftorium (talk) 19:33, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Creation of Year mixtape categories

Hello, Koavf. I spoke to Dan56 (talk · contribs) a couple of days ago about mixtape albums/compilation albums (User talk:Dan56#Mixtapes/Compilations). Anyway, since you are an expert on creating these subcategories for albums, I thought I would ask you should mixtape albums be included in Category:(Year) albums or Category:(Year) compilation albums or should an entirely new categories be created for mixtapes (Category:(Year) mixtape albums) like: Category:(Year) greatest hits albums. What do you think? QuasyBoy (talk) 21:29, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Diffusion The question is really if the main category is unnavigable. Are there enough mixtape albums to warrant diffusion? Take a look at (e.g.) Category:Demo albums--it can be navigated comfortably. Alternately, when I started diffusing Category:Live albums two years ago, it had thousands of entries. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:15, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
I think it comes down to whether mixtapes should be listed under compilations, which they are not always are. I mainly referring to the Template:Infobox album which has mixtapes listed under compilations. Perhaps a different color should be used instead of the green color that is used for other compilation types, greatest hits, box sets and so on. I beleieve having this issue moved to Template talk:Infobox album would be best. QuasyBoy (talk) 21:46, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Categorization I think that you have a good point it should probably be directed to WT:ALBUM to get the most eyes on it. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:53, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
I'll bring it up there when I get the time. QuasyBoy (talk) 05:33, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Advice

Hi Justin, How are you? I hope all is well. Listen, I wanted to ask your advice about something in the Community Trolls article that may not be precise. It says "In November 1984, the Buzz of Delight began recording more songs, which remained unreleased until three of them came out years later on To Understand." Actually, they had another song called "I've Got Gold" that came out in 1990 on the CD version of a compilation called Squares Blot Out the Sun. [1] Now, I suspect that this song was from the November 1984 sessions, but I really don't know for sure. If I knew for sure that it wasn't, the sentence would be fine as is, and if I knew for sure the song was from Nov. 1984, it'd be easy to fix. But since I don't know, there's no easy way to fix the sentence. This has been bothering me for a while, but I haven't known what to do. I mean, I could add another sentence saying that there was another song called "I've Got Gold" released in 1990, but it's not clear which sessions it came from, but that's too much sidetracking and too much detail since the article isn't about the Buzz of Delight. (Plus, I already used one "it's not clear" in the article and am not really comfortable using another one—I mean, it's very likely the recoding info has been published somewhere, perhaps on the CD itself, in which case it is "clear" to whoever has access to that info.) Any suggestions? Moisejp (talk) 23:50, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Prose Unfortunately, copy is not my strong suit... You could write something like ""In November 1984, the Buzz of Delight began recording more songs, which remained unreleased until three of them came out years later on To Understand. Additionally, the track 'I've Got Gold' was released on the 1990 CD version of the compilation Squares Blot Out the Sun." which would just leave the recording date deliberately ambiguous. Alternately, you could call the recording studio/producer and see if they have records. That wouldn't be a source you could cite, but it was at least give you some clarity on how you write your prose. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:19, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi Justin, how you doing? Sorry for my late reply. I ended up taking your advice and I contacted someone who has connections in the Athens scene and M. Sweet inner circle. He found out that "I've Got Gold" was not recorded at the Soundcastles sessions. And also he reminded me something that I do have in one of my sources but somehow neglected to include in the article, which is that there were not one but two post-Soundcastles Buzz of Delight sessions. The first one was in the summer of 1984. "I've Got Gold" was recorded at one of the two. As you say, I can't explicitly say that, but I will be able to at least word my info in such a way that it's not saying anything false or misleading. The person I contacted also told me about another song that Stipe and Sweet wrote together that I've never seen mentioned anywhere. Of course, I can't mention it in the article, but it was very interesting for me personally. He also had suggestions about ways I could try to contact various people who were there, including Stipe, Sweet, and John Keene, but of course I wouldn't be able to use any info they told me if it wasn't published somewhere. Too bad. Anyways, thanks again! Moisejp (talk) 04:27, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

An Appropedia invite

Hi Justin - Congrats on your article in the Indy Star last month! :-) As I was reading it, I wondered if you would be interested in participating on another wiki, Appropedia, from time to time. I finally got around to checking out your user page and noticed you have a few userboxes related to green stuff. When you get a chance, check it out and let me know if you have any questions. I have the same user name there. Regards, RichardF (talk) 14:31, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Excellent I don't know how much I have to give, but this is certainly a nice resource (and collaborating on issues related to sustainability are completely appropriate!) Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:22, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Even one more reader is just fine.  :-) --RichardF (talk) 19:10, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

AWB

Hi. Can you use AWB to add Category:Transport ministers of France to all of the names in the Minister of Transport (France)?♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:14, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I have nsomething else. Can you go through all of the Turkish village I created today and remove the endings from the infobox and lead. I may have something else once that's done involving switching references.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:11, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

AWBing I'd be happy to work it out, but it so happens that I'm here now, so my Internetting is spotty. I'll do it as soon as I can. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:25, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Ah, how is everything at wikimania? Anybody notice the Turkish stubs across the big pond eh? Its delightful to see such national institutions LoC and National Archives involved, makes you have more faith in the whole wikimedia project.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:39, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

If you are interested, I can take a look. It isn't anything I've done yet on AWB so it might take me a while to figure it out. Ryan Vesey Review me! 19:46, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Its OK, as I have another task needed afterwards involving switching sources to a large number of articles! Thanks for the offer though! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:03, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

My second visit

Had I read your username I would have recognized it as I have been here before. When I was talking to you, I got the impression that you were a new editor. You told me that you did not have certain plans to attend the conference and this gave me the idea that you were not overly enthusiastic, and I did not see you wearing your name badge. I also did not see you in user:Magioladitis's or User:Rich Farmbrough's discussions about AWB, although now that I think about it you were sitting with Richard when I talked to you last. Congratulations on your mention in BBC. I hope that we can meet again in Hong Kong next year. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:33, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
