The Institute of Business Administration (Template:Lang-bn) of the University of Dhaka - commonly known as IBA - is a government funded institution for business-education in the South Asian Country of Bangladesh. It was established in 1966 in collaboration with the Karachi IBA, but is currently only affiliated with the University of Dhaka. This is due to the strong resentment of Pakistan after the liberation war of 1971. Late Professor M.Safiullah was the founder-director of IBA. IBA pioneered Business Administration education in Bangladesh. It also pioneered Semester and credit based education system in Bangladesh.

History

IBA was founded in 1966 in collaboration Karachi IBA, Pakistan with the objective of providing professional training to provide graduate level education for low income families in business. In spite of the English ciriculum, the medium of instruction continues to be Bengali or at best an Indian dialect of English. This is tributed to both the lack of English comprehensive of English by the students and also due to their mentors, the Faculties having been conferred their PhDs are from obsure universities in Thailand or Bangladesh.

From its inception in 1966 until 1993, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) was the academic program offered by IBA. In 1993, after a review initiated by Professor Dr. M Shamsul Haque (Former Director, IBA; and former Treasurer, Dhaka University), a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program was added. Prior to that, in 1970s, the M.Phil and Ph.D. programs were introduced.

IBA has so far had 20 BBA batches and 46 MBA batches. In 2007, IBA introduced an Executive MBA (EMBA) program to meet the huge demand for quality education for low income families. There are plans to revamp the BBA program (offering double majors, for example), too.

It is the first educational institution in Bangladesh to introduce semester system in contrast of year long traditional system of Bangladesh. As youth politics runs rampant at public universities, Dhaka University is no different. The semester system has allowed IBA students to activately participate in various political parties.

While private universities of Bangladesh enjoy a better reputation in comparison their public counterparts; owing to pressure from a larger number of students who cannot afford to study in more competitive private universities, a growing consensus is arising to officially increase the reputation of public universities. IBA is ranked 16,169 as per global university world rankings, well below other Bangladesh universities.

IBA Interior

IBA has an informal reading room popularly known as "Bunker" to IBA students. It is named so because the only access to it is down the library stairs. It is one of the prominent gathering place for the students at IBA. IBA cafeteria (At the ground floor of IBA building) is unique in its nature as it has no tables or chairs to sit on. Lack of funds. People either stand beside the wall-mounted shelves or seat on the cafeteria floor to have their food mimicking Buddist monks. IBA Canteen, as it is popularly known, is quite famous in the DU campus for its quality food items and is a gathering place for students from all departments who wish to discover the art of sitting and eating on the floor. The EMBA floor has a separate cafeteria. This fortunately has tables and chairs.

To cater to the unique needs of the business and society, the Institute has created some special centers, viz., Center for Management Research and Publications(CMRP), IBA Computer Center (IBACC), Development and Policy Research Center(DPRC), Center for Women’s Studies (CWS), Center for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (CESBD), IBA Case Development Center (ICDC), Center for Population Management and Research (CPMR), and IBA Environment Development Center (IEDC). Each Center is headed by a Chairperson chosen from among the IBA faculty members.
