Alfhausen is a municipality which is a member of the Samtgemeinde Bersenbrück in the district of Osnabrück, Lower Saxony.
Geography
Location
Alfhausen is nearly 27 km north of Osnabrück.
Climate
Moderate sea climate affected by damp northwest hoist by the North Sea. In the means of many years the air temperature in Alfhausen 8,5° reaches - 9,0 °C and there fall approx. 700 mm precipitation. Between May and August can be counted with on the average 20-25 summer days (climatological name for days, on which the maximum temperature exceeds 25 °C).
History
Alfhausen was created 974. The name Alfhausen comes from the Low German and means "Eleven houses". The exact history is however unknown. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic. However there are also different religious communities in the town. The town was under the rule of the Kingdom of Hanover A certain amount of the citizens immigrated to Baltimore in the United States
Sightseeing
Starting in 1971, the Alfsee was begun as a floodcontrol storage basin for the Hase; it was named for its closeness to the municipality of Alfhausen. As a popular trip goal for holiday travelers and Ausflügler, the lake has won great importance in the last years. The retention basin was extended in the 90's by a second in order to receive water from a larger catchment area.
The newly renovated church built in the 13th Century is one of the main attractions for couples to marry here. See with dignity church was partly built in gothic times, such as the Bentheimer Taufstein. Moreover, some 16th-century buildings still stand in the old local centre.
