St. Henry Catholic School is a private school for grades K-8 in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1957, it is a part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nashville.[1]
Coeus24 (talk) 14:15, 1 August 2012 (UTC)== History == Henry Neuhoff, a German immigrant from the Rhine Valley, purchased a large farm in southwest Nashville in 1952. [2] Two years later, in December 1954, Neuhoff gave the deed to 16 acres of his farm, for a church and school, to the Diocese of Nashville. Ground was broken in April 1956, and in August 1957 the school opened with 196 students registered in grades 1-8.[1]
Expansion
The early 1960's saw a massive expansion for both St. Henry's and the surrounding area. A building boom began in West Nashville. Warner Park Valley subdivision, nicknamed Vatican Valley for its close proximity to the church and school, began development. Nearly 400 homes were built in the immediate area around the school. As a result, Neuhoff transferred the deed to an additional 64 acres to the diocese for the expansion of the school. In 1965 total enrollment in the school was 375; by the late 1970s it had grown to over 600 students.[1]
Renovation
By 1990, the student body had outgrown the old school. Portable classrooms were brought in as a temporary fix for the overcrowding, but a permanent solution was needed. In 1992 plans for renovation and additions to the school were formulated. Fund raising kicked off in February of 1993, and in October 1994 a ground breaking ceremony was held. New renovations included a new building with 18 classrooms, a new gym, along and a complete overhaul of the entire existing building; estimated cost was $6 million. Construction progressed rapidly, and in September 1995 the new school was dedicated with a special Mass. By now, the school had some 645 students educated by over 40 faculty and staff.[3]
Dominican Sisters
Since it's inception, St. Henry has been administered to and run by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia. Traditionally, four Sisters form part of the faculty, one as principal and the others as teachers (although St. Henry's first principal, Sister Inez, taught 2 grades during the first year of the school).[3]
