Gregorio F. Zaide
Gregorio F. Zaide (May 25, 1907–1986) was a Filipino historian and author. A multiawarded author, Zaide wrote 67 books and 500 articles on history. He was one of the founders of the International Association of Historians of Asia (IAHA), and he was also thrice president of the Philippine Historical Association.
Early life and education
Zaide was born in Pagsanjan, Laguna on 25 May 1907. He was known as "Goyo" to the people of his home town of Pagsanjan, Laguna.
His primary and secondary education were in Spanish, when Spanish was the social language of the Philippines. He graduated as valedictorian of Laguna high school (Laguna High School) in (1926). He obtained his M.A. in (1931) from the University of the Philippines in Quezon City and his A.B. and Ph.D. degrees in 1934 from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila.
His wife's name was Lily Magbanua.
Career
Zaide was the first Asian to win the United Nations Study Award in 1957. His other awards includes the Diploma of Outstanding Writings on Filipino National Heroes, A Special Prize in History in the 1940 Commonwealth Literary Contest, the Republic Cultural Heritage Award of 1968, the diploma of Distinction for research on the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal and the Distinguished Public Service Award.
He was a member of Instituto Historico de la Independencia Americana of Argentina and Instituto Panamericano de Geografia e Historia of Mexico. He was elected as President of the Philippine Historical Association and served in this capacity for three terms. He was also an active member of the American Historical Association based in (Washington, D.C.). He was also a member of both the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines and the National Research Council of the Philippines.
In his time, he was the most traveled Filipino historian, with teaching and research stints at various universities and institutions in the United Nations, the United States, Mexico, and other countries in Latin America, and Asia, as well as at the University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, San Beda College, University of Hawaii, University of Manila, and Far Eastern University.
He was one of the founders of the International Association of Historians of Asia (IAHA), and he was also thrice president of the Philippine Historical Association. Dr. Zaide was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club.
He also served as the Mayor of his hometown of Pagsanjan from 1971-1975.
Zaide retired on May 25, 1964, and became the first Professor Emeritus of History at the Far Eastern University.
Zaide was also awarded the prestigious Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1968 by the Philippine government.
Zaide's published works are periodically updated by his daughter, Sonia Magbanua Zaide. An accomplished historian and writer, Sonia holds advanced degrees from London School of Economics (LSE). Her published works, as well as her father's, are usually required textbooks or additional reading materials in most Philippine high schools and colleges.
Despite being required material for institutions, Zaide has stated himself as well.[1]
Major works
Zaide was a prolific writer and historian. He wrote about 67 books which were adopted as textbooks for high schools and colleges. Zaide also authored more than 500 articles in history published in both national and international newspapers and academic journals. Among his contributions to Philippine history are the books A Documentary History of the Katipunan, History of the Katipunan, Philippine Political and Cultural History, Great Events in Philippine History, History of the Filipino People, Jose Rizal: Life, Works and Writings, The Philippine Revolution, Riquezas Filipinas en los Archivos de Mexico, Great Filipinos in History, and The Pageant of Philippine History.
