Talcher is one of the 4 sub-divisions of Angul district in the Indian state of Orissa. Situated on the right bank of the river Brahmani, the capital of the erstwhile Talcher State is one of the fastest growing industrial and mining complexes of the country.

Geography

Talcher is located at 20°57′N 85°13′E / 20.95°N 85.22°E / 20.95; 85.22.[1] It has an average elevation of 78 metres (255 feet).

Climate

According to the Central Pollution Board, Talcher is the most polluted industrial hub.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Talcher had a population of 34,984. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Talcher has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 62%. In Talcher, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Talcher is known for its coal reserves. It has numbers of underground and open-cast mines. Dera colliery is the oldest mine here. The coalfields are managed by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL). The establishment of Talcher Thermal Power Station(TTPS), Heavy Water Plant and the Collieries (MCL) have greatly enhanced the importance of the place.

The nearest airport for approaching the places of interest in Talcher is at Bhubaneswar (160 km) which is connected with New Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai, Mumbai, Visakhapatanam, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Nagpur by Boeing flights.

Road

Talcher is connected to N.H. 55 via N.H. 23 at Banarpal and at a distance of 160 km from Bhubaneswar, the place is an important road junction of the State connected by regular bus services from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Talcher, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Rourkela, Raipur, Durgapur and other important places of the State and sister States.

Talcher Palace

BHIMAKUND

A rock art sleeping image of Lord Vishnu is located at Bhimakunda village about 30 km north of Talcher town and 50 km from Angul & on the right bank of river Brahmani. Now it is situated within the complex of the largest coal based Super Thermal Power Plant of NTPC. The image sleeps on its right side. The image is about 42’ (126.5 CM) long & 8’ wide. The image is the second largest image in India in size, the Gomogteswar in Karnataka being the largest. However, it has the honour of being the largest sleeping image. The period of its construction is assigned to 8th –9th Century A.D.[3]

Famous Festivals

HINGULA JATRA

Goddess Hingula is worshipped with great devotion by the people of the surrounding areas. It is located at a distance of 14 K.M. from Talcher. Goddess Hingula is believed to be the agni ( fire) in the kitchen of Lord Jagannath at Puri. An open cast coal mine of MCL has come up recently near Gopalprasad. Hingula Yatra is observed here for nine days during the month of Chaitra. A lok mohotsav is organized here for a week long period on the occasion of the yatra when tens of thousands of people visit the place. Health Care Infrastructure

There is a sub-divisional hospital at Talcher to cater to the health care need of the people. There are also Ayurvedic & Homeopathic dispensaries. .[4] Also there is MCL run Nehru Satabdi hospital which is planned to be upgraded to a super specialty hospital.[5]
