    Page hijack

I tried to access the Mooreland, Oklahoma wiki page, and I saw a message instead that said "Earth Exploding Live sends friendly greetings to readers of this article. This message will be taken down within 24 hours if the link specified gets at least 2000 hits. Thank you." What is going on here? Trjumpet (talk) 16:05, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We had some vandalism on templates. This means that doing a Google search for the message will give loads of results, but visiting those hits (and their related histories) won't show the message—the template that was vandalised was transcluded, not substituted. matt (talk) 16:45, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. Lost

Ok, a few days ago I signed up to help with images on Wikipedia. Today I'm completely lost, so lost in fact by the sheer number of pages and links and links to pages or pages to links et-al that I don't know if I'm coming or going! Look I'm good with images, give me a image of a pigs ear and Photoshop and one hour later I return it looking like a silk purse! However I'm a simple soul who only want to help not study for a flipping Ph.D. in Wikipedics. So if anyone has "Editing images in Wikipedia for Dummy's" please post it here (wherever here actually is!) --Ceepin1826 (talk) 01:51, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some images are hosted here at http://en.wikipedia.org and some at http://commons.wikimedia.org. See Wikipedia:Graphic Lab and commons:Commons:Graphics Lab. If a file page has a "Full resolution" link then be sure to work on the full resolution. Images are edited with your own software and must be reuploaded after editing. When your account becomes autoconfirmed you get a link on file pages saying "Upload a new version of this file". An account is autoconfirmed when it's at least 4 days old and has at least 10 edits. If you want to be able to reupload images at both Wikipedia and Commons then you must reach autoconfirmation at both sites. Your Wikipedia account currently has 3 edits and becomes 4 days old in 5 hours. All edits at en.wikipedia.org count. It doesn't have to be article edits. Public Domain Images

I am currently trying to figure out if the photos for the Washington State Legislators are licensed in the Public Domain. They are located here and here. I have previously uploaded two of these photos, but they were deleted because there isn't an explicit statement that they are in the Public Domain. While I was looking for photos elsewhere, I found that Ballotpedia was actively using the photos (like this one). For the photo's permission information, it is stated that "This image comes from the http://www.leg.wa.gov/pages/home.aspx website. It is used here because a Ballotpedia staffer requested and obtained permission to use it and was informed by the relevant government office or private entity or individual who created this image that the image is in the public domain.". Does this mean that we must contact the same government office as Wikipedia and obtain the same permissions, or can we take Ballotpedia's word that a government office stated that the images are in the public domain? Gold Standard 02:42, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    I would say ask the office for permission. RudolfRed (talk) 03:01, 31 July 2012 (UTC)RudolfRed (talk) 03:00, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Block

Hello, I am User:Andrei.smolnikov. I edit wikipedia from my school's IP adress often, however, sometimes I am unable to do so because of vandalism only accounts resulting in my school's shared IP address being blocked. This means that often I am unable to edit Wikipedia even when I log in. Could you please tell me if it is possible to do anything about this? Thank you. You can also try to find out who in your school is blocking the Ip address.Receptie123 (talk) 11:57, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

From the question, I think it is Wikipedia blocking the school and not the other way around. RudolfRed (talk) 16:03, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How exactly do I ask for a IP block exempt? The page wasn't quite clear. Andrei.smolnikov (talk) 00:38, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My reading from the relevant pages is that you would request this at the same time you request unblocking the next time it happens. I agree that this is not made very clear across the references we have. BigNate37(T) 01:12, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Watchlist bot hiding concern

Rather than suppressing bot edits the watchlist seems to suppress the page altogether, such that if a page is edited by a user and then a bot in quick succession, the page does not appear on my watchlist at all. In this manner, an unsigned comment effectively masks that talk page from appearing on my watchlist. What should be happening, is while bot edits are suppressed, the most recent non-bot edit should be used for determining watchlist sorting. Is it correct to call this a bug, or am I being naive? BigNate37(T) 18:56, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That would be a better implementation, yes. Currently, those "show/hide" options really only make sense when you are using the "Enhanced watchlist". -- John of Reading (talk) 21:22, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You may use local time if you set it in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-datetime, and that will affect the times on history, logs, watchlist, and recent changes, but signatures will still be in UTC. I actually normally use an offset of -6 but I changed mine temporarily to UTC to ensure I was accurate in my response to you. BigNate37(T) 20:52, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, we have no control over what Facebook do - you would have to ask Facebook (which probably isn't very easy). However, I've tweaked the logo a bit to see if Facebook like it more in a different format. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 04:57, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Having trouble adding a header image correctly to an infobox template

Hi, I made a new infobox template for TransLink railway stations in South East Queensland, and I want to add a little TransLink logo to the top left of the title bar that shows the name of the station, but so far all I can get it to do is either stick directly to the left side of the text or have a weird gap below the image and the title. How can I fix this? The page is Template:Infobox_TransLink_railway_station Thanks, TravellerQLD (talk | contribs) 06:36, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, that logo is copyrighted and non-free, and logos do not qualify under our Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria policy for use in templates. Wikipedia:Non-free content and Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline are the applicable guidelines that expand on how this policy is applied. BigNate37(T) 06:54, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Template:TransAdelaide uses a logo in its header. TravellerQLD (talk | contribs) 06:58, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
File:AdMetTrainTransAdelaide.jpg is freely licensed. File:Translink-corner-logo.png is non-free fair use content, and only has a fair use rationale for use in Central railway station, Brisbane. In fact, that's probably not a sufficient rationale. TransLink (South East Queensland) is the only article that can really justify bearing a non-free logo for TransLink, and it's already using File:TRANSlink-brand.svg. I'm not a resident copyright policy expert so I don't feel comfortable spelling out exactly how things have to change, but that situation is going to be have to be looked at and fixed. If it's any consolation, I looked at your template code and tried to see if I could help you solve your technical problem, but that's a bit over my head as well. BigNate37(T) 07:05, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I believe WP:FUC #8 is where the restriction on use of non-free logos comes from that you see in Wikipedia:Logos. Specifically, WP:LOGOS#Logos as icons states "Logos should not generally be used as icons within an article's Infobox." BigNate37(T) 07:10, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Only the copyright owner can choose what license to release the logo under. Your responsibility as the uploader is to choose the license template that's appropriate for what the company has chosen. If I'm at the correct TransLink website (there are like five companies called that) then http://translink.com.au/site-information/legal/copyright states that the logo cannot be used for commercial purposes, which is incompatible with our free licensing requirements (see WP:NONCOM). Lame. I'll just remove it then. Thanks anyways. TravellerQLD (talk | contribs) 07:22, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It looks as though TransLink makes use of the same free images as Adelaide for bus, train and... is that a taxi-boat? For instance on the bottom-right of http://translink.com.au/tickets-and-fares/fares/ekka. You may wish to try using File:AdMetTrainTransAdelaide.jpg or a coloured variant of it since it appears to be the same? In any event, I'm sorry I had to rain on your template like that. I'm off to sleep for the night, happy editing. BigNate37(T) 07:37, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re the removal of my article on Frederick Tibbenham

    Frederick Tibbenham (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Hello, My well-researched article on Frederick Tibbenham has either been removed, or is about to be. The remover says there are no sources. I can't think why such a statement has been made. All sources are checkable, and from reliable sources, such as the British War Museum's photographic collection - available on line, and the UK census, and the Daily Mail's archives. A search of 'Frederick Tibbenham' will bring up all quoted sources, but the removalist says he can only find one source of anything related to FT on the NY Times site. All the references are also contained within my Facebook page entitled 'Friends of Oakhurst' https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/friendsofoakhurst/ . Can you intervene? I have asked for the deleter's help to cite, rather than delete, as I know the entry to be correct and accurate. Thank you, Pandora Melly Pandoramelly (talk) 08:19, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Frederick Tibbenham article is (in my opinion) better and less biassed than most new articles, and I hope it will be retained. The problem is, I think, that the references are not incorporated in the article in the approved way. They should not just be listed at the bottom of the article, they should be linked to from the statements which they support, like footnotes.
I have begun to remedy this, by trying to do one of them in the approved way. I am far from an expert in this, and I may well have done it wrong, but I believe I have improved the article, and its chances of avoiding deletion. I hope you will be able to do the same for your other references. Maproom (talk) 09:00, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. It would help to start with more information about who Mr. Tibbenham was: nationality, date of birth, profession. Something like "Frederick Tibbenham (1892-1968) was a British carpenter and businessman".
You mention here that some of the information comes from the Daily Mail's archives, but the article's sources don't mention any newspapers. If this person has received coverage in a national newspaper then the article is much more likely to be kept. I suggest you edit the article to show which information comes from news coverage, using the {{cite news}} template to format the title, headline, date and author neatly. Sources for Wikipedia articles don't have to be online. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:25, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the article looks potentially salvageable with a bit of rewording and a lot of reference-finding and formatting, although a google search does show hits being a bit thin on the ground other than catalogue listings of named Tibbenham furniture for sale. Well researched the article may be, but unfortunately, well referenced it is not. If you have access to offline sources, such as books and articles about Tibbenham, you need to add them as citations to the article using the format suggested by John of Reading. I will start trying to help out with improving the article. But please note: (1) Wikipedia is not for promotional purposes. The article will stand or fall on its merits, irrespective of your desire to raise Tibbenham's profile as part of the campaign to preserve his work, however worthwhile an aim this may be. (2) Correctness and accuracy are not criteria for keeping or deleting a Wikipedia article, although they are important in assessing its content. What matters most is whether the article shows how its subject is notable by Wikipedia's standards, and whether the information is verifiable and impartial. Links to Facebook pages are unacceptable anway, and you can't expect readers to go chasing off somewhere else to look up a list of references - you have to cite each reference to the statement in the article that it supports. - Karenjc 16:18, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article is currently at User:RichMoon/Holidaysafe. Maproom (talk) 10:36, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As it says at WP:ORG: an organisation is notable by Wikipedia criteria if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability. I can't find any such coverage of Holidaysafe. None of the links or "references" you provide are anything other than listings or incidental mentions, and Holidaysafe's own website doesn't count. The only vaguely promising one was the Which link, but there's nothing about Holidaysafe at all on the page that you've linked to. What you need is actual articles about the company in independent media sources, such as newspapers, journals, magazines or mainstream professionally produced websites (not user-generated). You need to assert how Holidaysafe is notable by Wikipedia standards (have a look at WP:GNG too) and then to support that assertion by referencing to the coverage I mention above. Without this, the article will not survive in mainspace for long. - Karenjc 12:08, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the feedback - I've made some changes and added more references, could you let me know if the page is looking better now? Thanks RichMoon RichMoon (talk) 16:05, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In my view it reads like the "about" page of a website - ie it's too promotional in tone and I am not convinced that notability has been adequately demonstrated either.--ukexpat (talk) 17:16, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Check I'm not spamming

Hi, I am the editor of film review website flickfeast.co.uk. We have been referenced a few times on wikipedia and we have just published a great Top Ten Pedro Almodovar article which I was adding as an external link on the wikipedia film pages of the titles we have included.

I hit a warning that you might consider such action as spamming. Can you please confirm if that is the case as I do not mean to spam you!

I had intended to also add external links to some of our best reviews to individual film pages. But I won't if you consider that spamming.

Thanks, Robin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robin Yacoubian (talkcontribs) 09:39, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please read WP:LINKFARM and WP:EL. Both are relevant guidelines about the external links that can/should be listed on an article. Generally, we don't list just any review. We do use reviews as sources if they come from noteworthy reviewers. Dismas|(talk) 10:53, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. You shouldn't add links to your own site. Our policy page Wikipedia:External links says: "you should avoid linking to a site that you own, maintain, or represent—even if Wikipedia guidelines seem to imply that it may otherwise be linked. When in doubt, you may go to the talk page and let another editor decide." Even if it wasn't your site, it may not be suitable for the external links section, unless it provides substantial information that couldn't be added to the article. The external links section is very selective, and only the most important links are included. Links to official web pages are fine, major interviews are often linked, and we can also have links to material too detailed to be included in the article. Reviews can be mentioned in the article and included in sources/references sections, but we don't include lists of reviews in the external links section. --Colapeninsula (talk) 11:00, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    New astray template

I made this to work on other pages besides help desk. It will be handy on article talk pages when someone has a question about the subject. Thoughts? Template:Astray2--Canoe1967 (talk) 13:36, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We could just bake this functionality into {{astray}} and have it automatically detect whether it's been placed on the help desk or elsewhere. I might poke around with this myself in a day or three if nobody else has by then. BigNate37(T) 07:58, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My search box is on the left side of the screen, which is where I want it, but other than that this looks fine. A person asking in the wrong place is not likely to know about changing the appearance of the page, though.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 13:43, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done: I've now changed {{astray}} to incorporate Canoe's context-generic phrasing. Any tweaks to the template's wording can now be applied to both "versions" at once, which ensures they do not become divergent. You may continue using it as it was originally intended with no change; if you subst it elsewhere, it now has Canoe's wording. I have redirected astray2, as it is now redundant. Marking this as resolved; if we want to change the wording of astray itself, let's take that to WT:HD or to Template talk:Astray. BigNate37(T) 04:29, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand where this would be useful with the language its generating when posted outside of this page. The one place it was used as astray2, Talk:Olympic Park, London, it made no sense at all in response to the question asked. It's bad enough it's misused at least half the time on this page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:45, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's the only placed it was used without substitution, which is wrong to begin with. We should never use a template without actually reading it first, and this one is no different. I agree that the instance to which you refer was incorrect. The documentation explains when to use it, and uses this example as an appropriate time to use the template—that is, when it is obvious that the person who asked the question believes that they are at a website operated by the subject of their query. You may wish to read the 28 August 2011 TfD for Astray, where others also criticized the template out of concerns for its misuse. BigNate37(T) 05:07, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Nate, I know: I created the template, wrote the documentation, added the example of classic use you're citing to me, and was also the nominator at the Tfd you're citing! I would like to see examples of where this would be useful outside of this page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:29, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    You mean I typed all that for naught?! BigNate37(T) 05:36, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Lol! Well it does have a z number, so we can track how it's being used. Again, I am having trouble imagining a post to which it would be responsive and appropriate outside of this page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk)
Well, supposing in the example that a similar question was asked at Talk:Waltham Watch Company. However, I don't have a real example to show you. Thanks for the link to the z number; I hadn't heard of that before. BigNate37(T) 05:52, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If a similar question was asked at the talk page of the watch company then the opening of the template about "I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles..." would make no sense whatsoever, because we would not suspect they read some article out of our millions. Rather, we would know exactly which article they had read. It would need to instead open with something like, The page you are here about is an encyclopedia article at Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and not the webpage of the company itself, which you appear to have mistaken it for. We have no affiliation with the subject of our articles and so..." Even with that tailored opening, the language "this page differs from the one you may be seeking" doesn't make sense. It implies there is another page at Wikipedia they may be looking for, not that they are in the wrong place.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:47, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Fix redirects post-move

A couple of times today I've had to manually fix a bunch of double redirects after a page move - and after closing this AfD the other day I found myself having to manually delete about 25-30 redundant redirects. I know there's a bot for fixing double redirects, but do we have a tool that allows bulk deletion/redirection of such pages? There's possibly one in the admin toolkit, but if so, I haven't found it yet. Much obliged for any suggestions. Yunshui  12:42, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I use User:Splarka/ajaxbatchdelete.js for bulk deletion tasks - cut and paste the list of redirects from "what links here", tidy the list and off you go. Placement of my Wikipedia entry in Google search results

    Hello,

About two weeks ago I created a new Wikipedia entry called "Library Assessment". When I search for it in Google it appears on the third page of results. All the other Wikipedia entries that I have searched for appear on the first page as the first or second result. Can you pls. explain/fix this?

    Thanks,

    Lynne 14:54, 1 August 2012

We have no control over Google. I suggest you just write the best article you can write and then Google will list it appropriately according to their own rules. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:21, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK Google ranks pages according to the number of incoming links, so a new Wikipedia article would rank far lower than a mature article that has been linked in a myriad of blogs and other web pages. If the world considers the article worthy of mentioning and linking, it's position in the Google listing will climb. Roger (talk) 15:27, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And to be frank, we are here to build an encyclopedia, not engage in a Google popularity contest.--ukexpat (talk) 17:26, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you Dodger67.

Ukexpat - It's got nothing to do with popularity, it has to do with visibility. If the library assessment community (or anyone else) is going to benefit from a Wikipedia entry it should be on the first page of results. Lynne 17:53, 2 August 2012

Wikipedia isn't here to benefit an organization or provide visibility. It's an encyclopedia. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 15:17, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am new to Wikipedia and I find the suspicion displayed by the Wiki community quite amazing - and frankly very disappointing. It is certainly not the encouragement or help I expected to receive when I asked my original question. After spending hours preparing a Wikipedia entry (in my free time) as a service to the library community, I did not expect to be accused of trying to promote my organization (a governmental university) when all I asked was why is it so difficult to find on Google. And just so you know, since I raised the issue, its placement in Google has changed dramatically - so thanks for helping! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lynne.porat (talkcontribs) 08:44, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

College Athletics pages -- team rosters -- Adding (W) to the LEGEND box and Q re: how to use the LEGEND codes

Example: Kansas Men's Basketball page found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010%E2%80%9311_Kansas_Jayhawks_men%27s_basketball_team#Roster

    1. The roster section of all such Wikipedia pages contains a LEGEND box that apparently is centrally managed, as it does not show up in the edit box when I am updating roster information.

Request adding (W) for WALK ON to the LEGEND box template to allow providing additional information for users.

    2. The LEGEND Box currently contains:

    (C) TEAM CAPTAIN

    (S) SUSPENDED

    (I) INELIGIBLE

a Red Cross icon for INJURED

a Red Shirt icon for CURRENT REDSHIRT.

What are the preferred ways to implement these notations when writing/editing the roster information?

These are ways I have found in exploring various pages --

    A. (C), (S) or (I) (soon to include (W)? :) can be inserted after the Player's Last Name (3 single quote marks)(x)(3 single quote marks) where x is the relevant code.

I have also found them coded as note=x, where x is the relevant code.

    B. CURRENT REDSHIRT coded cur_rs=yes

    C. INJURED coded inj=y

Are these last three examples the best way to code these notations?

    Timing of controversial changes

Has Wikipedia any 'tool' to tell if there is an increase in controversial changes when editors in the northern hemisphere have their daily routines disrupted by vacations (plural, because its not just one's own but all our children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces etc., all competing for one's attention whilst they’re on vocation). It might be that these incidences remains constant though-out the months (but I doubt it). Yet equally, it could be, that since the number of editors to oppose these changes (7 days) dwindle in number during these times - they take advantage - or could it be their ad hoc timing just happens to work in their favour. Some editors, whose life style appear to enables them to live online 24/7 and without of all these distractions, seem to have the advantage here; for pushing through controversial changes that would not survive at other times. I'm curious, because it seems to work both ways. Over the years I've seen some good changes made when the cohort of uniform editors, guided only by popular opinion (that they’ve picked up from the popular press), have had the rug pulled from under them by editors that have well informed professional insight of the subject. Some statistical data would help to find a better way to diffuse the apparent POV pushing and Wikipedia:Wikilawyering by the back-door. P.S. I 'am officially on vocation!--Aspro (talk) 22:03, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Ring Wales Rugby Union International

His rudeness towards coach Ron Waldron was due to the focus on physical fitness, not Ring's strength. Knee injuries, which had ruined his 1985-86 and 1988-89 seasons, hampered his performance and that tournament marked the end of his international career.

I feel this has been added to my profile by someone with a personal grudge against me! I have no idea why personal conflict with one of six Wales Coaches i played under, should be highlighted in my International Profile? Furthermore, it is offencive and incorrect. The records will show i was consistently in the the top 3 squad players with the best aerobic capacity throughout my International career. Problems which led to a breakdown of respect for the Coach in question, had nothing to do with my personal physical fitness. Waldron's public criticism of my playing style, which did not suit the way he wished to play was the factor that caused the rift between both parties. As for the knee injuries which 'hampered his performance' the knee was structurally sound. A fresh cartiliage injury, which happened during the final warm-up game against France (3 weeks before the first match) in Cardiff, meant i was rushed in for an immediate operation, forced to endure 3 weeks of rehab with no endurance training, which ultimately contributed to a lack of conditioning, further highlighted during the final quarter of the 'must win' final group match against Australia. Following a first round group match defeat against Western Samoa in Cardiff, where as the front line goal-kicker, (having missed some penalty goal attempts) i came in for some criticism, that would be fair to accept but to read on wikipedia, on my own personal profile, incorrect and inaccurate text is disappointing, to say the least. I sincerely hope, someone with a better insight into some relevant text with regards to my International Playing career can assist in editing my current profile, which is borderline defamation of character! wrong Chase Daniels

The Chase Daniels listed as someone from Kentucky is erroneous. The Chase Daniels from Kentucky is female and her real name is Tamaro Tatum (Chase Daniels was her radio name ). Also, she has had a more prestigious career, having won broadcasting awards, worked at more top-rated and diverse formats and has not only worked in Atlanta but also on the national level at XM (now SiriusXM). She also retired from radio in 2008.

The Chase Daniels listed on this site is from Jacksonville, FL, and has only worked in Florida and Atlanta.

The Chase Daniels from Kentucky had a Wiki page but it must have been erased and taken over by the other Chase Daniels from Florida ...yet it is still linked to the Kentucky page.

Need help with the unblock template

See here. I declined an unblock attempt and made some sort of coding error; my rationale for declining it got spelled out as the name of a template to be substituted, which (given the length of my rationale) not surprisingly doesn't exist. What did I do wrongly? I'd appreciate someone fixing it; since I've already declined it, and since I told the editor that someone might be coming along to fix it, please feel free to fix it without worry about procedural issues if you're not an admin, since you'll only be doing housekeeping that I was trying to do in the first place. Profession added to Biographical Article

I contributed a biographical article and the person's profession (economist) was added after her name before it was accepted. The article appears to now only be searchable if you use "karen davis" and "economist." Is it critical that her profession be part of the article title? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christinefh (talkcontribs) 18:14, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is already an article with the name Karen Davis, so it's necessary to add something to the title to make it different. You can add the new article to the disambiguation page at Karen_Davis_(disambiguation) so that people looking for Karen Davis can find the article on the economist. RudolfRed (talk) 18:21, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks!Christinefh (talk)
We have other ways of "disambiguating" (that is, adding text to the end to separate people with the same name), but in general, adding people's professions to the end of the article names is the most convenient way. Another common method is to use the middle initial. For example, if her middle name were Mary, it would be perfectly workable to use Karen M. Davis, because we have no article with that title right now. Nyttend (talk) 18:27, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Company article - infobox or prose?

I want to expand a stub about a company. I think I could add some information as values for the parameters in Template:Infobox company. Should I add an infobox to the article or should I include that information in the stubs body using prose? Is there any guideline regarding this matter? -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 20:59, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've always been of the opinion that the infobox should be a summary, and not used instead, of good prose. That is, anything that is included in an infobox should probably also be covered by well-written prose in the article. It is something like the lede section of the article: a quick summary of the key data points, but not a substitute for good writing. There may be good reasons to put something in the main body that wouldn't end up in an infobox, but most information in an infobox could easily be expanded and included in the main body of the article. --Jayron32 21:03, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unclear on why it has to be one or the other and not both... Dismas|(talk) 21:08, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The above two comments are correct. The infobox is exactly like the lead. It should reflect the information in the article. It is more of an "at a glance" than a holder for information. Ryan Vesey 21:19, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the replies. The article in question is Animation International where I thought about listing the locations where the company is active / has offices from [1], perhaps under some infobox parameter (not sure whether area_served would be the best parameter for this). Personally I would also prefer stating that information using prose. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 21:46, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi there,

It has come to my attention that when I search something in Traditional Chinese in Google, the Google result will show the text in Traditional Chinese, but once I click on the Wiki link, the target page will be shown in Traditional Chinese for a few seconds before being auto-redirected to a Simplified Chinese. Without having seen the edit I can't be sure, but it sounds like you added it to the references section because you think it is a good reference, and not because it was used as a reference in the article. Reference sections are not for listing references, good or otherwise, but for listing those sources that are actually used as the source of the information in the article.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:23, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Reporting Users

How do I go about reporting users who are "vandalizing" pages by purposefully adding untrue/false information?

    Thank you

    Jluca1976 (talk) 01:07, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can report obvious and persistent vandals at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Before posting there, a final warning in an escalating series should have been posted to the user's talk page (for example {{Uw-vandal4}}, {{Uw-spam4}} or {{Uw-speedy4}}), and the user must have vandalized within the last few hours, including after the final warning was given. Various warning templates can be found at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. Your block request is unlikely to be acted upon unless you follow these steps. Cases that are not simple vandalism can be reported at WP:AN/I. Of course, in conjunction with warning against and reporting vandalism, you have the ability, mandate and are encouraged to revert all instances of vandalism you find yourself.Template:Z36--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:19, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Note: in this case I would use the warning series {{uw-error1}}, etc.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:20, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's impossible to comment on the particular case without seeing it, but please be aware that there's a difference between vandalism and disputed content. Hoax information that can be proven to be an unambiguous hoax is vandalism, for example. However, in other cases editors disagree over wording or content in articles on controversial subjects, both citing sources to support their preferred versions. Accusations of vandalism often arise from both sides in such cases, but in fact this is a content dispute and various processes are available to try to achieve consensus. Identifying which scenario you're dealing with will help you decide how to proceed. - Karenjc 08:07, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, it is a very bad idea to try to add your company or organization to Wikipedia, since you have a strong conflict of interest, and may have difficulty maintaining the obligatory neutral point of view. If your corporation is genuinely notable, some third party will eventually write an article about it. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:53, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Peter Bodo, sports writer and blogger about Tennis

== Heading text == Writing and 'Truth'

    {Suggested for a box feature}

Before Mr. Bodo joined Tennis Magazine, I was a co-worker with Peter Bodo on the Passaic-Clifton NJ Herald-News where I was a newspaper reporter for seven years and covered county courthouse, city beats and general assignment news and features.

Your article mentioned how Mr. Bodo looked upon how writing should reveal "truth". One time, I faced a problem on how to describe why the tiny borough of Wallington NJ wanted to ban blue jeans from public schools, and I was stumped. Mr. Bodo suggested the conflict could be summed up in the lead: The Wallington Board of Education wants to zip up the age of the blue jean by passing a new dress code for public schools.

It was a perfect suggestion and I adopted it. (I rarely was stumped for lead graphs.)

That is what Mr. Bodo means by truth.

    1. REDIRECT Target page name

I loved tennis, played it regularly, and subscribed to Tennis Magazine for years before I discovered to my delight Mr. Bodo joined the staff covering the rivalry between Jimmy Connors and McEnroe and many others to come.

That is all. I don't know if this "fits" Wikipedia's standards to be included. I submit it humbly for your consideration. Thank you. bob podesfinski

I think you're trying to tell us a personal anecdote about Peter Bodo for possible inclusion in the article. Unfortunately, this counts as original research unless the anecdote has previously been published in a reliable source. Dear Wikipedia, I’m very sorry, I seem to have irritated you guys. It’s certainly not what I intended. I have rather confused myself. Please try to understand that my IT and internet skills are rather poor. I am still rather confused, but I will try harder. Maya Frida Barr (talk) 08:59, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot irritate Wikipedia, only some people among them. Rest assured, that we understand how difficult it is. Do not feel discouraged. Creating articles from scratch is very hard. Writing a good article from scratch is much harder then you probably ever imagined (Think submitting an article to scientific publications-kind of hard). Just participate, do small things, learn and improve. Apologies are not needed. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:46, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Please help with a Merge

Per WP:REDUNDANTFORK the article Congenital absence of the fibula needs to be merged into Hemimelia. The only content of Congenital absence of the fibula that might need to be kept is the external links, some of the categories and one of the WikiProject templates on the Talk page - the rest is duplicated (and better written) in Hemimelia. I've never done such a merge before so I'd apreciate some help completing the process. Roger (talk) 09:01, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My advice would be to redirect Congenital absence of the fibula to Hemimelia and add the external links, cats, and wikiproject templates separately. The complicated part of a merge is making sure the authors of the content are attributed in your edit summary, and on a talk-page template, this is not necessary here, because you are not copying prose. If you need any further help, give me a shout. Quasihuman (talk • contribs) 09:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So I copy-paste the templates, cats and exlinks then replace the content of Congenital absence of the fibula with a redirect. That's all nice and simple, but what do I do with the content of Talk:Congenital absence of the fibula? Roger (talk) 09:45, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If the wikiproject templates allow class=redirect, replace the class=stub with that, otherwise delete them. There is no need to merge the content of the talk pages, I would just put a note on Talk:Hemimelia to let editors know it's there. Quasihuman (talk • contribs) 09:56, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Please check that I haven't made any mistakes. Thanks for your help. Roger (talk) 10:41, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All good. Glad to be of help. Quasihuman (talk • contribs) 10:58, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have added {{copied}} information to both articles' talk pages as well as adding redirect templates to Congenital absence of the fibula, which also gave me the opportunity to mention the target article explicitly in the edit summary, which is very much necessary for licensing purposes. Please see WP:SMERGE for details. And yes, Quasihuman was not only correct that talk pages do not need to be merged, but they should not be merged. BigNate37(T) 15:38, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's probably best to do that to be on the safe side, but there is unlikely to be an attribution issue where no text has been merged, all that was merged was a cat, a stub template, and some external links, not content that I would have thought requires attribution. Company info

How do I add our company information to Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Waxselection (talkcontribs) 11:33, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to request that a page be made.

Went through all the prompts without creating an account.

Was directed to the category and subdivision to the area of my interest.

I was only shown an alphabetical list of, maybe pages that are already requested and in progress????

How can I REQUEST (a direct link maybe?) that a PAGE be MADE and not a list....because the page I want is NOT listed?.

For example, If I wanted to request a page be made about John Doe, JR an actress, why am I being directed to: Select category: Film -> people -> ABCD....-> I select "D" -> There is no Doe, John, Jr. But no LINK to ask for the page about John Doe, Jr to be made?

First, ensure your company meets the notability requirements. If it does, go to Wikipedia:Requested articles/Business and economics/Companies and add the title of your proposed article under the appropriate sub-heading there, ideally with a line or two of information or a weblink. Article declined, reviewer doesn't answer/talk

I wrote an article and a user declined the submission. I contacted him on his user talk-page and saw that many other users had contacted him (for the same reason) but he never answered. Looking into the history of his talk-page showed me that he keeps on deleting the page every couple of weeks or so... What can i do? 194.95.117.68 (talk) 12:28, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This decline by User:Phantomwiki is I assume the one that you're talking about, and was not unreasonable.
This recent edit by User:Phantomwiki appears to be an occasion of them interacting with an article creator after a query. However, it's misplaced (on the user page instead of the user talk page) and at least moderately inaccurate ("If others vote for your article to be accepted, it will be" - there is no such voting process).
Phantomwiki makes a lot of AFC declines, but after looking through half a dozen, they look mostly OK, this one is one that I would be a bit concerned about.
Roy Benson was an AfC submission that Phantomwiki accepted during this period, so they are not exclusively declining submissions.
This is an example of Phantomwiki responding to an article creator on their talk page, but the response is upside down (at the start of the talk page not the end), and tells the creator to "put embedded references (the little numbers in brackets) in your article to support the information", without explaining how or providing a useful link like WP:REFB.
This was the state of Phantomwiki's user talk page immediately before they blanked it yesterday. It has outstanding requests for feedback or help, regarding Phantomwiki's AFC declines, from the original poster of this thread, and from User:Realestateone, User:Pierre.Hardin, User:Aliaretiree, User:Tatratea and User:Siobhanstirling. As far as I can tell, Phantomwiki replied to none of these queries before blanking them.
I don't think it's appropriate to deal with AfC submissions while ignoring the majority of article creator queries in this way. I would like input from Phantomwiki as to whether they can change this approach. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:42, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
First of all: Thank you, Demiurge1000! Don't get me wrong, I don't deny that my submitted article had (and probably still has) its flaws, but nevertheless I would have liked the reviewer to at least give me a short comment oder answer etc. I felt quite "deleted" and I guess others may have felt the same way... 194.95.117.68 (talk) 13:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a bit to the above, and left a note on Phantomwiki's talk page asking them to comment on this. Can now wait until they have time to do so (or not). --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:49, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dead Birds film by Robert Gardner

    Hi,

I'm trying to get some information corrected on the documentary film, Dead Birds, by Robert Gardner. I am the studio assistant here for Robert and he asked to have this date corrected on all websites as the actual release date was in October 1963 at the Loeb Drama Center at Harvard University. I was able to edit the release date on the site, but the title of the page still says Dead Birds (1964). I was wondering if it would be possible to get this date changed as well as to not confuse readers.

thanks for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jade s7a (talkcontribs) 14:42, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    and

    to

    With regards, 109.93.148.134 (talk) 21:59, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is the reason for this update? Ruslik_Zero 08:34, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Reason is that the latter informations are fuller and referenced, whilst those already present are obsolete and conflicting with the new, referenced informations. Another reason is that the article is semiprotected and can't be edited by unregistered users. 178.223.199.235 (talk) 11:12, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find any mention of religions in any of the files located at the link you cited. Can you provide a more specific reference, like the pdf file and a page number, so the updated numbers can be verified. Thanks. Sarahj2107 (talk) 13:30, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The information is found in the Book 3: "Confession, Mother Tongue and National Identity or Ethnicity According to Age and Gender – Data by Municipalities". Problem is that it's a zip file CONTAINING the pdf file (that should be the reference), so it can't be linked since it automatically proposes download. Note: only numbers are found in the book (page 13/409). I calculated the percents myself. For example, there were 7.498.001 people in Serbia. From those, 6.371.584 were Orthodox. So, 6371584 times 100 divided by 7498001 (direct proportionality) is 84.977102... pretty close to 85%, not 84.1% (as the already present informations state). Same goes for all others. 178.223.199.235 (talk) 14:58, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the proper course of action if you are unable to modify semi-protected pages is to raise the issue on the talk page using {{edit semi protected}} to bring it to an editor's attention. This isn't really a help desk question. BigNate37(T) 15:14, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And repeatedly "bumping" the thread to the bottom of this page won't win you any friends either.--ukexpat (talk) 15:22, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I was on the talk page, and I was told: Not done: Changes are minor. A request template is not needed. You may ask at help desk for minor changes such as this. Canoe1967 (talk) 09:21, 1 August 2012 (UTC) See!!! And if I don't 'bump', surely no-one will help. So, will someone help or not? 178.223.199.235 (talk) 15:29, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well I certainly can't fault you for coming here in that event. Though that doesn't change that the article talk page is where this should have occurred. BigNate37(T) 15:44, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done I checked the percentage calculations and your numbers seem more accurate, I also put a more precise ref in. Sarahj2107 (talk) 15:38, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Yay!!! Thousand kisses, Sarahj2107!!! I can't thank you enough!!! 178.223.199.235 (talk) 15:55, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alert message is unfair and should be removed

How do I undo the alert from the Berkeley Optometry page (University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)):

"This article appears to be written like an advertisement. Please help improve it by rewriting promotional content from a neutral point of view and removing any inappropriate external links. (February 2012)"

I strongly object to this subjective assessment of the content of our page. Every statement is factual, and no comparative claims are made. There are no inappropriate links.

Display of an alert request to rewrite "promotional" content is a serious criticism of the page and is unfairly punitive. It calls into question the validity of the information when there is no justifiable reason for doing so.

Please delete the alert message from this page. (The page has intermediate edits and I did not want to revert the page.)

    Thank you. Wikimonjin (talk) 18:03, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I concur with the assessment that the tone of the article is inappropriate for a neutrally written encyclopedia, and it does need to be rewritten to improve it in that regard. The entire thing reads not like an encyclopedia article written by a disinterested third party, but as a brochure trying to entice people to come to the school. It needs someone with some good article writing skills to go over it. It also appears to lack any quality, third-party references and looks like all of the information comes directly from the school itself. I have added some more clean up tags for those reasons. Look, if the article is substandard, don't complain that people note it is substandards. It needs to be cleaned up, and removing the tag does not fix the serious problems the article has. Before it is removed, the article needs fixing. --Jayron32 18:14, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    I agree with Jayron. The article needs a re-write. Oh, and it's not your page. See WP:OWN. Dismas|(talk) 18:26, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
TBH, an article about a university department, written by what very much appears to be a single purpose account with a conflict of interest, and virtually no useable references, does this even need a stand-alone article?--Jac16888 Talk 18:31, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing

Is this editing Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.109.239.109 (talk) 18:31, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do not understand. Could you please explain further? :) 18:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zaminamina (talkcontribs)
Can you clarify your question? RudolfRed (talk) 18:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My guess is that 83.109.239.109 has deliberately asked a self-referential question. If I am right, the answer to it is yes. Maproom (talk) 20:27, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have NEVER edited a wikipedia page, but every time I come to read information, there is a message saying I need to stop making edits or my account will be blocked. I don't even have an account with you! Please stop threating me! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.23.96.82 (talk) 18:32, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's ok, nobody is threatening you or blaming you. IP addresses are generally dynamic, meaning your IP address today might have belonged to someone else yesterday who did vandalise--Jac16888 Talk 18:38, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You are editing from an IP address. It is likely that that IP address was assigned to a different person in the past, and that person made an edit resulting in a warning. The way to avoid this is to create an account. RudolfRed (talk) 18:39, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Note that even if someone else gets an IP address blocked that you then inherit, this will not prevent you from reading Wikipedia, and should you really want to edit Wikipedia there are ways to address that situation too. As a reader, you do not have to worry about it. BigNate37(T) 21:08, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

100 questions by FACEBOOK members asked to anyone seeking political office

Why doesn't facebook put up an area on the site where members can submit to a list of questions they would like an answer to by anyone seeking political office. Pick out the top 100 questions asked and submit them to everyone seeking office; presidental office, congress and also state office seekers. This list should include simple questions like: 1. Do you rent or own your home? 2. Is there a mortgage on your home? 3. Did you have a student loan? 4. Do your children have or have a student loan? 5. Education level? 6. Occupation before seeking political office? 7.Do you have any domestic employees? 8. How many cars do you have? 9. What is your average electric bill? 10. Do you own more than one home(s)? 11. Do you have a saving account? 12. Does your wife hold a job? 13. What did you pay in taxes each year for the last 10 years? ------- The answers to the 100 top questions FACEBOOK member submit to an office seeker may bring to light just how far we have gone from electing someone who represents our interest and just how far the office seekers have gone in getting money and endorsements from special interest groups and bring to light their motivation for seeking office. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.168.147.252 (talk) 18:46, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You'll need to ask Facebook. This is the page for asking about how to use Wikipedia. RudolfRed (talk) 18:54, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Autoconfirmed question

Is there a way to check and see when User:Red Hat On Head will be autoconfirmed? She has over 10 edits and it appears like she has been editing for more than 4 days. Am I mistaken? Ryan Vesey 18:51, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The best way is to check the account creation log - in this case, the account was created at 04:47, 30 July 2012 (UTC), so she should be autoconfirmed as of 04:47 today. Hersfold non-admin(t/a/c) 19:18, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are some cases where autoconfirming takes longer. See WP:AUTOCONFIRM. RudolfRed (talk) 20:03, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, is there a userrights log that shows if someone is autoconfirmed? I've never been able to find one because it isn't a granted userright. Unless she is using Tor she should be autoconfirmed by now. If she is in fact not being autoconfirmed, I suppose the best thing to do would be to have an admin give her confirmed status. Ryan Vesey 20:09, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
According to Special:UserRights/Red Hat On Head she is a "Implicit member of: Autoconfirmed users", and it's not there for everybody, see Special:UserRights/Capehorner91 our newest member--Jac16888 Talk 20:16, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you. She's autoconfirmed Ryan Vesey 20:23, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Special:UserRights can only be used by admins. http://en.wikichecker.com/user/ says whether a user is autoconfirmed but I assume it cannot detect Tor restrictions. Special:Preferences says whether your own account is autoconfirmed. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:25, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, didn't know that, my bad. Well for none admins, autoconfirmed users have "Implicit member of: Autoconfirmed users" above a list of checkboxes for other rights, non-autoconfirmed users don't--Jac16888 Talk 20:33, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Locating Military Personnel

    All concerned,

I'm trying to locate Didi Matsumoto. Middle name is Masae. Email address: didi.Tau@us.army.mil. The family is trying to locate Ms Matsumoto so they can return her children to her. The family doesn't know what to do. Ms Matsumoto doesn't want the family to contact the childrens father which lives in Oregon. These children needs to go to either mother or father. The grandmother has been caring for the children with no assistance from either parent. To our understanding the father thinks that his children are with their mother in Texas so he has been sending Ms Matsumoto $400 a month for the 2 children. Can someone please help this family locate Ms Didi Matsumoto. Have a blessed day.
