The Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement was a rebel movement in Sudan, which emerged in 1983 and was led by John Garang de Mabior. SPLA/M consisted of a military wing, the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), and a political wing, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). Following the independence of South Sudan in 2011, SPLA became the regular army of the new republic and the SPLM its governing political party.
