Box Elder High School (abbreviated to BEHS), is a public high school located in Brigham City, Utah (population Apx.18,000). It is part of the Box Elder County School District, and serves approximately 1,400 students in the 10th through 12th grades in Utah's Box Elder County.[1] The school mascot is the bee. They are best known for their excellence in athletics (wrestling, football, track, and softball), their drill team, and their choral program. Box Elder High School was originally built in 1894, its original location at 18 S. 500 E. Brigham City, UT. Since then, the Box Elder Middle School has taken the original school's place at that address. Since its original construction in 1894 at 18 S. 500 E., Box Elder High School has had several additions and modifications to the school building including the moving to its present location, 380 S. 600 W. The most recent renovation was started in 2007 and was finished and newly dedicated in the winter of 2010. A few things remain from before the renovation such as the drama, band and choir room locations as well as the auditorium and gyms receiving only superficial renovations. The tech buildings were only repainted and given updated equipment, besides being mostly left alone. Across the street from the school is an LDS seminary building for students who choose to devote a class period to religious studies.

Mission statement

The mission of Box Elder High School is to "maximize student learning through quality teachers and effective instruction in a classroom environment."[2]

Athletics

The Bees have a long and storied tradition of being powerhouses in men's football, track, and wrestling; and in women's softball. The Bees are in Utah classification 4-A and compete in Region 5. Box Elder has 8 state titles in football, 8 titles in wrestling, 8 in men's track, 6 in women's softball.[3] Sports played at BEHS include:

Football. The Bees have won the 4A state championship in football six times, with the last victory coming in 1995. That season was led by Marc Dunn, the 4-A football MVP, who went on to star at Ricks College and later played in NFL Europe.

Track & Field. Box Elder emerged in the 1990s as a force to be reckoned with in track. The boy's team won the 4A state championship in 1992 and was 2nd in 1999

Wrestling. Box Elder has a tradition of producing many of the top wrestlers in the state. Each year the Richardson Memorial Invitational tournament is held at BEHS. Coach Ripplinger has noted that "A lot of teams use the Richardson as a guide for the state tournament."[4] Box Elder won the 4A state championships in 1989, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2011. Box Elder Wrestling has also been ranked top in the nation many times including 2011 (18th) when they completed, for the first time ever, a undefeated season and broke the state record for most points scored in a state tournament (312 points) and for greatest difference in points between 1st and 2nd (130 points).

Softball. Since women's softball began being played in Utah in 1990, Box Elder has won more games than any other team in the state. Coach Jim Fuller retired in 2010 as "the winningest high school softball coach in Utah, with a 423-114 career won loss record (a .788 winning percentage) and six state championships (his final was at Fremont High School)".[5] The team was completely dominant from 1995–2001, winning their first 4A state title in 1995 against their biggest rival, Bear River, and then followed their title up with state crowns in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001. They were nationally ranked by USA today in 1996 and 1997. Since 1990 they also have four second-place state showings and three third place finishes, playing in 9 of 21 state championship softball games. BEHS softball has won 11 league titles, and has had 50 players receive either NCAA Division I or NJCAA scholarships.[5]

The Rockettes. The BEHS drill team consistently wins state and National drill competitions. They swept every 4A division in the 2002 & 2006 state drill team championships.[6][7] Other notable finishes include a tie for 1st in the 4A novelty category in 1996, and 5th place in the dance category in 2008.[8]

Rivalries

Box Elder High School has an intense rivalry with Bear River High School in the nearby Bear River Valley (in Tremonton and Garland, Utah). Although these schools do not share the same division, competition and tensions run high in invitational games, meets, and matches.

Choral program

Box Elder High School Choirs have a firm reputation among city residents for their stellar performances. Their concert has received Superior ratings at Region and State Festivals for many years, and have been featured and won awards at the State UMEA Convention, Division ACDA Convention, and the Heritage San Francisco Festival (2002). BEHS Madrigals perform extensively throughout Northern Utah, and also consistently receive Superior ratings at State competitions. They have been named "Outstanding Choral Group" and "Outstanding Choral Program" at a number of festivals including: Vancouver, Canada and the 1997 Houston, Texas Festival.[9]
