The Mitla Pass is a 32 km-long snaky pass in the Sinai wedged between mountain ranges to the north and south. It is about 50 km east of Suez. It is famous as the site of major battles between Israel and Egypt in 1956 and 1967; in both years, the Israeli forces, led by paratroopers, achieved surprise by means of the depth of the thrust behind Egyptian lines, and ultimate victory.
