Fate / Hollow Ataraxia is a fun disc of Fate/stay night released in October 28, 2005. It features extra episodes where you can enjoy your time with the Fate characters and couple of mini games. But there's also the important serious plot line. The story takes place half a year after the Fate/Stay Night game. It's not necessary a true sequel that follows a single ending, but more like a side story. Template:Spoiler

Main Characters
Bazett Fraga McRemitz: A mage sent from the Mage's Association to fight the 5th War of the Holy Grail. A physical combat style mage who enhances her fighting power with rune sorcerey. She was born in Ireland as a descendant of an old family of mages. They have been detaching themselves from the Association and living in the shadows quietly. They're a special line of mage called the Traditional carrier - Gods holder where their power was passed down through bloodline than the handing down of sorcerey. Bazette didn't want to stay there and joined the Association. Even though her bloodline was rare, they had no use so she wasn't greeted. That's why she chose to become a Designated to be Sealed hunter where she can make use of her skills.
Her personality is pretty straight forward. She is serious and hard working, doesn't like to do anything unfair. Short tempered, but calculating. She's 23 year old but acts very mature, at least on the outside. In reality she was alone, trying hard to be that way. When she met Kotomine in one of her past missions, she trusted him just because he would listen to her stories. She was happy that she got invited by Kotomine to the 5th grail war, but ended up getting betrayed.
She was doing pretty good with Avenger, but seems like her best partner is Lancer.
Karen: The replacement priestess that was sent from the Church to Fuyuki city to report the aftermath of the 5th War. Since Kotomine was destined to die in the previous War, she was drawn into the looping 4 days as the manager. Because she was someone that wasn't there in the previous war, she was able to view the strange event from the outside and was able to give some advice to Shirou/Avenger.
In the Church, she was an exorcist assitance. Her body has a strange characteristic that when there is a person who is possessed by a demon nearby, she will experience the same pain as that person. She is kind of like a human radar that an exorcist can use to detect the demons nearby. That's why grotesque spikes grew out of her body when Avenger/Shirou came near her in the night scenes. That's also why she has bandages all over her body; She is hurt everytime people near her do evil things, and that happens all the time in society. Durning battle, she uses a red cloth of Magdala, which has the power to forcefully bind men. She purposely chose her costume without a skirt for mobility and to seduce men.
Her basic personality is angelic and giving. She believes its the natural thing to do to use her power to save people, even though her body is hurt all the time. She doesn't even mind letting strangers rape her, saying it's the demon's fault, there's no sin to the person. However, she also has a devilish side where she likes to tease people. Whenever she finds someone's weakspot, she likes to bring it up all the time. And I don't know if it's her Christian nature or part of her teasing, but when she's at fault with something, she apologizes to God instead of apologizing to the person. When Avenger talked back at her, she one time squeezed his face with her bare hand without changing her expresssion.
She does have a weird personality, and that might be coming from her parents. Her weak mother died soon after giving birth to her, and his father was gone before then. In her Mother's language, her last name means the flower of hydrangea, and in her father's language, her first name means pretty/lovely/sweet. According to all these hints, we can conclude that she is the daughter of... Kotomine! But that fact didn't really matter in this game's storyline... She ended up liking Avenger/Shirou, but we don't know if she'll like the real Shirou.
According to Type-Moon, she was suppose to be a sub-character in TsukiOOOO2.
Avenger: The 8th Servant who was accidently summoned in the 3rd war, who made a re-appearance in this game. His true name is Angra Manyu, the evil spirit of Zoroastrianism, but he is not the real one. He was an ordinary villager, but one day he was sacrificed as an evil demon by his villager. The villagers labeled him as the all evil being, and by sacrificing him, their mind was salvaged. So he was like an undirect hero, and that's how he became an heroic spirit. Of course in his view, he only hated the world who killed him in the most brutal way possible.
His former self as a Servant was already gone after the 3rd War, but his entity remained inside the Holy Grail and grew over the years. Finally by granting Bazette's wish to stay alive as the Holy Grail, he took form as a Servant once again. But since he only had the memory of the first 4 days of the 3rd Grail War, it resulted in a strange world where in the day time the Masters & Servants from the 5th grail war roams around, and in the night time the War begins between the Masters & Servant of the 3rd and 5th War mixed together. That world kept on looping until Bazette chose to end the contract or until Avenger's remaining power ran out.
His ability as an Servant is the lowest. Even Bazette is stronger in physical combat skills. He has a pair of daggers that locks his opponent's weapon, but it was easily broken by Saber. His Noble Phantasm that returns his damage to his opponent is pretty useless too, although it worked well in combination with Bazette. His personality is also hopeless; Lazy and having no sense of justice. But at the same time, since he took the shape of Emiya Shirou in the day time, he cared about others deeply inside. The original Avenger who was sacrificed as Angra Manyu probably had a similar personality; Hated the world so much, but at the same time he was forgiving and found that world to be precious.
Secondary Characters
Emiya Shirou: Shirou in this game was Avenger who copied his personality. That's why his personality sometimes went weird or didn't know some skills that he should have. We're not sure where the real Shirou went.
Tohsaka Rin: In the first half of the game, Rin is in London, but she went wild after coming back cosplaying as Mikos and magical girls. She also showed herself to be an experienced mage. She was the first one to find a possible explanation for the looping 4 days and gave advice to Shirou.
Synopsis
Template:Spoiler When the opening movie finishes, you are suddenly controlling another character, Bazette Fraga Makremitz. (In the previous game she was slightly mentioned as the master who got her arm chopped off by Kotomine and stolen her command mantra of Lancer. We never found out what happened to her after that. But this Bazetter still had her arm) She woke up dizzily one night in a mansion, and there was a Servant in front of her. And that wasn't Lancer. Bazette doesn't have her memory before she lost her consciousness but she knew she was fighting the War of the Holy Grail in Fuyuki City. She pulled herself up and began the war with the Servant. This Servant was a strange one. He was extremely laid back, doesn't seem to have any special skills, and had no sense of justice. For example, he started killing ordinary people saying that's the easiest way to kill the other Masters; that way they'll eventually run into one. Bazette on the other hand was a serious mage who couldn't allow him to fight dirtily like that. Not trusting each other, they arrive at the Church. They encountered a Master called the Edelfelt there and started fighting. However her Servant got killed instantly by a Saber. Make that Two Sabers, controlled by Twin Masters. Bazette was dead and her War came to a quick end.
There was another transition and you are finally controlling Shirou, as he woke up in his storage. Saber said good morning as he headed for the kitchen. When he got to the dining room, not only Saber but Tiger, Sakura, Ilya, and even Rider were there having breakfast together. They started talking about Rin who made an explosion in Ilya's castle by experimenting the 2nd magic of Jewerly and failing. Ilya explained now the principle of cause and effect was shifted, event horizon warped, and future and past connected. Rin left to London in order to work complicated things out at the Mage's Association. We never know if this was the initial cause of this whole mess, but in this Fuyuki city, every Servant and Masters (except Kotomine & True Assassin) were alive as if it it followed an ultimate good ending in Fate / Stay Night. But somehow the Servants were feeling the War was about to start again. Most Servants though, had no interest in fighting since there was no Holy Grail that would grant their wish. But, if it was to protect their Master or if their Master wished to fight, they said they will go all the way. Lancer who was always fishing at the port agreed, but if there was a need to fight, he said he'll ready to fight anyone. Shirou, as a precaution, decided to look around the town every night to make sure every's okay in town. He thought he saw black shadow one night. On the fourth night, he was attacked by a dark monster. He was fending it off, but soon it muliplied and covered the city. Right before he was killed, he saw a mysterious girl.
You are back to Bazette's Mansion. The Servant was playing his puzzle game out of boredom like the first night. Bazette woke up from her sofa and the Servant greeted her like it was the natural thing to do. Bazette was puzzled at why she's alive again, but soon came to the conclusion that this was the Servant's Noble Phantasm that revived them and returned them to the first day. She quickly familiarlized herself with the situation and made plans on how to fight the War. Her Servant boringly said that he only feels like fighting at night. Bazette said he only need to support her in battle since he's so weak. The Servant finally revealed his name, Angra Manyu the Avenger. (It was slightly mentioned in Fate / Stay Night that Avenger was the peculiar servant that was summoned in the 3rd Grail War who got quickly killed, and was the cause of tainting the Holy Grail.) As they went outside, Bazette proved herself to be a brilliant fighter as she crushed the dark monsters with her bare hands. But she occasionaly showed her weak sides as she spoke with her Servant. Like how she always thought of a certain hero in a story book since childhood and wished she can help him. As they got to the top of a building as they searched for their enemies, Bazette said she can only destroy things, she can't do anything good like donating to charity. Her Servant defended her saying money isn't everything, but it's true that spiritual salvation can only be accomplished by getting acknowledge your good deeds by other people; One needs to play the hero of justice. It was a selfish motive but he didn't necesssary hate it. Avenger was the weakest and an untrustworthy Servant, but Bazette had another look at him. He wasn't necessary strong, but he did survive and supported him in the battle against the monsters. Since they had additional opportunities to fight the war, Bazette decided fight the monsters to protect the citizens from the war for now. She suspects there is a mage who are creating a weird bounded field in the city. Avenger didn't care as long as he could have fun.
Back to playing as Shirou. He continued on spending his time happily with the other Servants and Masters. You as a player find hints here and there on what's going on: There supposedly was a visitor from the Sacred Church that came to replace the priest in his town's church, Shirou found an empty mansion that he thought he saw before, and so on. However, on the fourth day, you always return to the first day. Shirou wanted to go research the New Town at night but it was prevented by Archer who stood upon a building. He finally cornered the mysterious girl with the help of Saber, but some grotesque spikes grew out of the girl and killed him once again.
You are back as Bazette for the 3rd time. She just got killed by Assassin and returned to the first day again. She was starting to get used to the routine of dying and coming back, and accumulating her enemys' information to use as her advantage. As they go out for another round of the War, Avenger describes his Master as a weird person. Her outside look doesn't match her inside, it is as if she was wearing a shell. Acting strong outside, but cute inside. But that shell had affected her personality so much. She invited him to eat some food with him, but she finished her beef bowl in 3 minutes saying it was an efficient food place, not exactly enjoying her food. When they were about to sneak i == nto a mansion that looked like Rin's house, she couldn't wait for Avenger to pick the lock and kicked opened the door, setting off a trap: Milk spilled on top of Avenger. The two started to get along and seriously thought of winning the War.
Back to Shirou. He heard about a story of a woman who ordered two beef bowls when she was alone. She only ate one but the other was gone too when she left. Then he saw some milk spilled on Rin's house's floor when he went to clean her house. He wondered about those two strange events. Meanwhile, in order to defeat Archer, he finally remembered something that he somehow forgot about: His own skill of tracing. He then uses his last command mantra he had from the previous war to shoot Saber to Archer as he blocks his arrow with a shield he traced. As Archer is defeated, he gained access to New Town at night, and he arrives at the Church. A woman he had never seen before and a mysterious shapeless Servant was waiting for him. She said she defeated the other Servants, and he got no choice but to fight. At first Saber was pushing the opponent, but Avenger locks Saber's sword with his weapon and strikes with his other dagger. But Saber broke free and critically wounds the Servant. That moment, Avenger's Noble Phantasm was unreleashed "Verg Avasta - Copy of the inscribed natural world" It returned the same damage he recieved onto Saber. Avenger taunted Saber if she doesn't use her full power now, his Master will kill her and her Master. Saber used her Noble Phantasm, the Excalibur, but that was their plan. Bazette countered it with her weapon, "Fragarach - The Gourging War God's Sword". Saber was defeated, and Shirou was stabbed to death by Avenger. However Avenger said something weird to him, to bring another partner next time, someone who knows her well; As if he's the one who wants her dead.
Bazette awoke once again in her bed. She was surprised why they restarted from day one again when they never lost. Avenger reminded her that the War will go on forever; When the 4th day ends, they return to the first day and that's out of his control. Bazette was troubled at the new situation. She thought if they kept on winning, this wouldn't happen. Now there's no guarantee that even if she won within the 4 days, which was strategically impossible anyways, that this loop will stop. Avenger was laid back as usual not helping her at all. She concluded that she must find out the reason why this is happening. She headed for the castle in the forest hoping the Master of Eintzbern knows something.
Finally in Shirou's route, Rin came home from London. She quickly came up with a theory of what Shirou might be experiencing. A fake War that loops itself, and in each try, his memory is somehow accumulated like a third person's view. If there was someone who wasn't in the previous War, then that person is suspicious. Shirou had an idea on who that was, but told Rin that he always died when he met her. Rin told him then he must be meeting her the wrong way. Meanwhile at their school, they were preparing a gathering at Ryudo Temple with his school mates. Shirou also asked Lancer if he can help him defeat someone, but he said no if it's a woman in suit.
After the firstday of Shirou's school gathering, you return to controlling Bazette. Bazette was heading for Ilya's castle, but Berserker was in their way. Her counter attack was useless because he had 12 lives and she had limited stock of the weapon. As a mutal plan, they left Avenger to sacrifice himself while she went to see Berserker's Master. When Bazette got to Ilya's castle, Ilya was there and knew why Bazette came her. Ilya said Berserker wasn't her Servant, that was just a ghost; The real Servant of Einzbern was already defeated and taken away on the 4th day. And that Servant was Avenger. Bazette was confused, but asked Ilya if she can help her lift the 4 day restriction. Ilya said she was already out of this picture and she can't help her if Bazette was willing to continue the War. Bazette left the Castle and thought of other possible solutions. She decided to go out during the day time and meet the Mages in her town.
Finally Shirou was experiencing the ghost story telling in the introduction. When he went out to the restroom he finally found the girl he was looking for. Karen Ortensia was the girl's name. Shirou asked him what was her intention and why was she leading the dark monsters. She said she was only sent her to report the aftermath of the War. She had no intention of hurting others, and had nothing to do with the monsters. Suddenly the hill behind the Ryudo temple became a mountain of dark monsters. Shirou and Karen fought together back to back to fend off the monsters. The monsters were specifically aiming for Shirou crying out things like I hate you, you shall become one too. Shirou somehow traced Avenger's weapon and was aroused in battle. After the battle ended, Karen left saying we will be able to meet now.
Starting from the next loop, Shirou was able to meet Karen at the Church. But strangely, his attitude was not like himself when he spoke with her, showing feelings of hatred here and there. Their conversation was mostly about Karen. That she came here as the replacement Priestess to report the aftermath of the War to the headquarters, that she was an asssitant excorcist, that her body mutated because of her body was sensitive to evil powers, and that she was a born orphan. Then some discussions on the concept of good and bad.
One afternoon at Emiya's house, Rin was giving a possible explanation to Shirou's situation. Someone was reproducing the War and it only lasted for 4 days because that person only got to experience it for 4 days. In the middle of the conversation, they had a visitor. It was Bazette, and she came to see Shirou. But as she was conversing with Rin, something wasn't right. Bazette was speaking as if the War was still going on when it was obviously over to them. When Rin pointed that out, she got frightend and ran away.
As you go back to controlling Bazette, you see Avenger's past life where he was sacrificed as a demon when he did nothing wrong. When Bazette woke up, she demanded an explanation from Avenger. He was like oh yeah, the War was over half a year ago and it's themselves who were making this strange loop happening. Bazette felt betrayed and ran away to the Church. There she finally remembered how she was betrayed by Kotomine and fell to an even deeper agony. When she was dying from getting her arm chopped off, she made a wish of not wanting to die. Then something replied, if you'll become my master. The contents of the Holy Grail that was no longer needed. They both needed support to remain in this world, and that's how the loop began. When Avenger got to the Church, however, Bazette said as long as the War continues, we won't die; Then lets continue it. Either way this fake world seemed to be coming to an end. Avenger's vision was becoming narrower and narrower. This world was starting to crumble apart.
Meanwhile Shirou was able to find the real mansion of Bazette. When he took the earing that he found there to Lancer, he finally agreed to help him. Lancer and Bazette fought and both fell to each other's ultimate attack. Avenger who lost his master just stood there. He made a grotesque transformation into the dark monster saying he failed, and told Shirou to find the Heavenly grail.
Bazette awoke from the death from Lancer, and now Avenger said he became bored with the War, let's end our contract. He said when the victor of the War arrived at the Holy Grail, this will end. But Bazette insisted to continue it. She used her Command mantra to turn Avenger into her lost arm.
The story was coming to an end. Shirou met with Ilya, who knew everything from the beginning. That this world was reproduced, but all the people were real, except for one. That person was wearing a shell of another because it didn't have its own personality. Shirou went on a date with Saber to his school. On the way home, Saber said that these days may come to an end, but made herself clear that she will help him accomplish what he wants to do. At the Church, he continued to have a poor conversation with Karen, but realized that he liked her and forced her into the bed.
The final night. Shirou headed for the Holy Grail, the dark moon up in the sky. He climbed up the spiral ladder with Karen. Meanwhile the other Masters and Servants were fighting the swarm of dark monsters who were trying to stop him. Rin and Archer defended the bridge to the new town. Caster, Souichirou, and Assassin wiped out the intruders to the Ryudo Temple. Sakura and Rider protected Shirou's house. Ilya and Berserker charged through the city streets. Gilgamesh annhilated the ones who tried to sneak through. Saber was the final guardian who allowed noone to disturb her master's wish. They stood up and determined to fight their own battle to tommorow.
Sent off by Karen, Shirou/Avenger finally reached the top. Bazette was standing there. She was ready to kill him if he wished it to end. She said she doesn't want to die, and she was sure he doesn't want to return to nothingness either. But he want to end this because he was the "Hero of justice" and cared for someone else other than himself. By this time, they were actually thinking about each other. Bazette wanted Avenger to stay around and have him enjoy his life as Shirou, a human being. Avenger on the otherhand wanted to free her... because she was still alive. She was kept barely alive for half a year by him, and finally a woman from the Church found her in the secret room of the mansion and treated her. He gave her courage to face that reality and they decided to go their own way. The Holy Grail was falling apart. They ran towards their fate in opposite directions.
Epilogue. Bazette woke up in her mansion. It was afternoon. There was a completed puzzle on the table. She said good bye to her Servant and hi to the new day.
