2012–13 Chelsea F.C. season
The 2012–13 season will be Chelsea Football Club's 99th competitive season, 23rd consecutive season in the top flight of English football, 21st consecutive season in the Premier League, and 107th year in existence as a football club. They will also compete in the UEFA Champions League, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, having won the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history.
On 13 June 2012, Roberto Di Matteo signed a two-year contract, becoming Chelsea's permanent manager,[1] only being appointed as interim manager after the sacking of André Villas-Boas during the 2011–12 season.[2]
Key events
- 28 April 2012: Jeffrey Bruma agreed to spend another season at the German side Hamburg after making 22 appearances and scoring two goals last season.
- 28 April 2012: Chelsea complete the signing of Marko Marin for a reported fee of £6.5 million from Werder Bremen.[3]
- 4 June 2012: Chelsea complete the signing of Belgian winger Eden Hazard from Lille for an undisclosed fee, but rumoured to be around the region of £32 million.[4]
- 7 June 2012: Chelsea lose out in their bid to purchase Battersea Power Station.[5]
- 13 June 2012: Chelsea announce the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo as first-team manager, on a two-year contract.[6]
- 18 June 2012: The Premier League fixtures are released and Chelsea, start their campaign against Wigan Athletic and finish their campaign at home to Everton[7]
- 20 June 2012: Didier Drogba completes his free transfer to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.[8]
- 1 July 2012: Salomon Kalou and José Bosingwa leave Chelsea upon the expiry of their contracts.[9]
- 4 July 2012: Chelsea confirmed that Thibaut Courtois loan had been extended for the 2012–13 season, after they had reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid.[10]
- 12 July 2012: Patrick van Aanholt and Tomáš Kalas have been loaned out to Dutch Eredivisie club Vitesse for the 2012–13 season.[11]
- 13 July 2012: At the Westminster Magistrates' Court, John Terry was found not guilty of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand. The district judge concluded "there being a doubt, the only verdict the court can record is one of not guilty."[12]
- 17 July 2012: Chelsea announced a “global energy partnership” with Russian energy firm Gazprom, in a three-year deal with a value deemed "commercially confidential", that will help reduce the club's deficits under UEFA's financial fair play rules.[13]
- 19 July 2012: Chelsea start of their pre-season strong with a 4–2 victory over the Seattle Sounders, goals coming from Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and two from teenage striker Romelu Lukaku.[14]
- 23 July 2012: Chelsea earn a 1–1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain on their second friendly match of pre-season, goal coming from youngster Lucas Piazón.[15]
- 24 July 2012: Chelsea complete the signing of Thorgan Hazard, the younger brother of Eden Hazard from French club Lens.[16]
- 25 July 2012: Chelsea complete the signing of Oscar from Internacional for £25 million.[17]
- 26 July 2012: Chelsea lose to the MLS All-Stars by a score of 3–2, with goals coming from John Terry and Frank Lampard.[18]
- 28 July 2012: Chelsea lost their final pre-season game in the United States to AC Milan 1-0 with a solitary goal from Urby Emanuelson.[19]
- 2 August 2012: Chelsea agreed to send Kevin De Bruyne on a season-long loan deal to Werder Bremen.[20]
- 4 August 2012: Chelsea lose their final pre-season game 3-1 to Brighton with Chelsea's solitary goal coming from Frank Lampard.[21]
- 10 August 2012: Chelsea agreed to send Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan deal to West Brom[22]
- 12 August 2012: 10 men Chelsea lose the Community Shield 3–2 to Manchester City, with Chelsea's goals coming from Fernando Torres and youngster Ryan Bertrand and Manchester City's goals coming from Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri.
- 16 August 2012: Chelsea agreed to send Sam Hutchinson on a season-long loan deal to Nottingham Forest. This being the first time Hutchinson leaves since he joined Chelsea's youth academy at the age of seven.[23]
- 19 August 2012: Chelsea win their first game of 2012–13 Premier League season by beating Wigan 0-2 with goals from Branislav Ivanović and Frank Lampard. New Chelsea signing Eden Hazard, making his Barclays Premier League debut, played a role in both goals. Chelsea also handed a debut to new signing Oscar.[24]
- 20 August 2012: Chelsea agree to send Josh McEachran on a season-long loan deal to Middlesbrough. Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo said "He's a great talent. His career's somehow stalled a little bit. He came onto the scene very, very early, very young and I think it's part of a player's development that you have ups and downs and you learn all the time. With Josh I think the best solution for him would be to get into that rhythm of playing games every week and get back the level that he was when he first broke through to the first team here." [25]
- 22 August 2012: Chelsea win their first home game of 2012–13 Premier League season by beating Reading 4-2. A Frank Lampard penalty gave Chelsea an early lead, but were down 2-1 at halftime. Second half goals from Gary Cahill, Fernando Torres and Branislav Ivanović gave the Blues the win.
- 24 August 2012: Chelsea officially announced the signings of César Azpilicueta from Marseille and Victor Moses from Wigan.[26][27]
- 25 August 2012: Chelsea make it 3 wins out of 3 in the 2012-13 Premier League with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United, with two goals in the first half from Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres.
