Panic! at the Disco is a Las Vegas, Nevada rock band with pop punk/electronica elements, whose 2005 debut album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out made the Billboard 200 album chart's top 30, selling more than 300,000 copies to date.
History
The band was formed in Las Vegas by schoolmates guitarist Ryan Ross and drummer Spencer Smith. They recruited fellow schoolmates bassist Brent Wilson and singer Brendon Urie. Their name was taken from a line in the song "Panic" by Name Taken, in turn a reference to a song of the same name by The Smiths.
In order to get their music heard, the band posted a comment on Pete Wentz's (of Fall Out Boy fame) live journal linking him to their PureVolume site. Pete Wentz drove out to Las Vegas, as he was so impressed by what he heard, in order to meet and hear them. He then brought them to the attention of Fueled by Ramen Records, who signed them while they were still in high school to Wentz's imprint label Decaydance. They recorded their album in Bethesda, Maryland with producer Matt Squire who had earlier produced Thrice.
The band attracted considerable publicity in the leadup to the release of the album with Spin magazine naming them as their band of the day in early October 2005.[1] The band has also increased in popularity due to their online presence with PureVolume having them consistently in their Top 10 signed band list and reaching #1 on the MySpace chart.[2]
A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
When their first album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (2005) was released, it debuted at #112 on the Billboard 200 album charts, at #6 on the Billboard independent chart and at #1 on the Billboard heatseeker chart, with nearly 10,000 in first week sales.[3]The band started their first North American tour, supporting Acceptance and Hellogoodbye in September 2005, as well as label mates The Academy Is... in the United Kingdom in January 2006.
I Write Sins Not Tragedies Video
Panic! at the Disco was featured on MTV's TRL along with The Academy Is... on January 17, 2006, where they premiered their music video for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", directed by Shane Drake. The group did not especially like the idea of appearing on TRL due to the fact a lot of fans would leave them because they went "mainstream". They posted a journal on their official website stating that it wasn't meant to happen, and they were against the idea and they apologize, but it ended up giving them a lot of publicity. The video for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", featuring Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque has an eerie circus wedding theme. It recently debuted at #10 on the TRL countdown, catapulting the album to the top of the Billboard independent chart and to #29 on the Billboard 200 in March 2006.
Other Information
Urie recently did a cameo appearance in Fall Out Boy's latest video for their single "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More 'Touch Me'", as a vampire alongside The Academy Is...'s William Beckett. This appearance may have been honoring Pete Wentz for getting Panic! At The Disco's music career moving.
