Wade's Causeway on Wheeldale Moor, looking south

Wade's Causeway is the name of part of an ancient road, thought to be a Roman road on Wheeldale Moor in the North Yorkshire Moors, North Yorkshire England. The section of the road is well preserved, and has been excavated.[1]

The name 'Wade's Causeway' is applied to the road, which ran from Amotherby near Malton to Whitby; passing roughly northward from Malton via Stape and crossing the River Esk at Grosmont, beyond which the route eastwards to Whitby is uncertain. It is thought to have connected the Roman camp at Cawthorne Camp with the garrisson at Lease Rigg. The road may be of medieval construction.[1]
