Military engineering is responsible for the preparation of the terrain for combat. Military engineers set bridges, open roads, set or clear mine fields, build headquarters, and carry out other activities that would give the troops an advantage over the enemy. Their actions can also have the goal of taking the enemy's advantage, ensuring the troops's survival. In 17th and 18th century sieges against fortifications they would sometimes employ tunneling under the fortifications to destroy them by explosives. In earlier eras they would be responsible for the design and construction of siege engines.
