Assigned Somalian radio journalist Abukar Hassan Mohamoud, who at the time he was killed was manager or Somaliweyn Radio.

Abukar Hassan Mohamoud, also known as Kadaf, (1969? - 28 February 2012) was a Somalian who was the manager/director for the independent Somaliweyn Radio, Mogadishu, Somalia. He had been working towards the re-launch of Radio Somaliweyn, which was attacked and looted by Al-Shabaab in 2010. [3]

Personal

Abukar Hassan Mohamoud, nicknamed Kadaf, had a wife and two daughters. He was a member of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ). He had participated in all the NUSOJ campaigns calling for journalists to be protected against harassment and physical attack; he courageously never hesitated to lend his name to statements condemning each of the murders of his colleagues.

Career

Worked as the manager/director of the Independent Somaliweyn radio station at his home in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Death

Kadaf, was murdered by two men armed with pistols who shot him five times in the head and chest at around 6 p.m. in the Wadajir district of the capital, Mogadishu. Although the killers were not immediately identified, family members and colleagues believe Hassan was murdered for his efforts to re-establish the broadcaster.

Reactions

Union Secretary General Mohamed Ibrahim (NUSOJ) stated "He was planning to bring the radio on air again. The reason is yet unclear, though he was very involved in civil society activism, such as youth in Banadir region in recent days. This is a really worrying trend for the journalists working in Mogadishu and the government has not done enough to investigate and bring suspects for prosecution.” [6]

“This murder of Abukar Hassan Mohamoud is another tragedy and continues to further undermine freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Somalia,” said Secretary General Omar Faruk Osman (NUSOJ) [3].
