Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he attended the Memphis Academy of Art as a teenage. He went to high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and majored in Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard College where he completed his this under the Catalan sculptor, Eduardo Chillida.(........) He studied architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of design and later wrote the history of the school through the 1970s (The Struggle for Modernism). He recieved his doctorate in art history and archeology at Columbia University and taught in its Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. From 1987 he has taught architecture and architectural history at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. (........)
