King of the Ring (2000)

King of the Ring (1999) was the seventh annual King of the Ring professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It was sponsored by Super Soaker[1] and took place on June 27, 1999 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Ten matches were scheduled on the event's card. The main event was a Ladder match featuring Shane McMahon and Vince McMahon defeating Steve Austin for the control of the WWF. The other main match was a WWF Championship were The Undertaker defeated The Rock to retain the title. Featured matches on the undercard included the KOTR tournament final between Mr. Ass and X-Pac, which Mr. Ass won to win the tournament and a Tag team match between Hardy Boyz (Matt and Jeff) defeating The Brood (Edge and Christian).

HHH was originally supposed to compete in the tournament, but he wanted to compete for the WWF title instead, so he gave his spot to Chyna. [1]

Reception

TheWrestleReview awarded the event a score of 6.8 out of 10 [2], stating that "Only two better than good matches on this card make it an average event, but still one worth watching. The Rock and Undertaker dream match stole the show with Austin and the McMahons closely behind. Billy “Mr Ass” Gunn won the tournament but then failed to have a single main event match after, rendering the whole tournament a bit of a waste and Billy Gunn the least successful King of The Ring winner."

Aftermath

The next night on RAW is War, Mr. McMahon claimed that the show that evening would be "a night never forgotten." Steve Austin announced that while he was CEO he wrote up a new contract for himself and made a few new rules, including the authority to assault Vince McMahon anytime he wanted, as well as booking himself into a WWF title match with the Undertaker. He made the stipulation that if there was any outside interference then the Undertaker would be disqualified and Austin would become the new WWF champion. Austin won the WWF Championship back from The Undertaker.
