Formed in early 2001 with the merger of the Pakistan Missile Organization (PMO), the Air Weapons Complex (AWC), Pakistan Maritime Engineering and the National Development Complex (NDC), NESCOM is charged with producing sophisticated weapon systems for the Pakistani armed forces. In the summer of 2001, more than 950 senior scientists, engineers, technicians, and PAEC staff were transferred to NESCOM on a permanent basis.
